Bringing home my little 8-week-old bundle of joy, Rico, has been such an incredible experience! I wanted to share a bit more about how we got his cozy new home set up and what those first few days were like, especially for anyone else considering getting a baby hedgehog. First things first, his habitat! We made sure to have everything ready before he arrived. For bedding, we went with soft, absorbent wood shavings, which he seems to love burrowing into. It’s also super important to have a safe, solid exercise wheel – Rico absolutely loves his red exercise wheel! I often find him running on it at night, burning off all that baby hedgehog energy. His cage is spacious enough for him to explore, and I’m already planning for a bigger playpen so he can roam even more safely outside his main area. Feeding time is another highlight! We’ve been giving him a specific mix of high-quality kibble, supplemented with delicious dried mealworms, which are his absolute favorite. It's so cute watching him munch away from his little light-colored bowl. Getting his diet right is crucial for a healthy hedgehog, so I made sure to research this thoroughly before bringing him home. Those first few days were all about helping Rico settle in and bond. I used a soft pink blanket to gently handle him, and we even have a special green fabric snuggle sack that he rode home in and now uses for naps. It’s amazing how quickly he’s getting comfortable. Sometimes I’ll find him curled up, sleeping soundly next to his food bowl – total 'mimi time'! He has these adorable gray and white quills, and watching him explore his new surroundings is just the sweetest. My biggest tip for new hedgehog parents? Patience and consistency! Let them adjust to their new environment and your scent. Regular, gentle handling helps build trust. Also, make sure to consider their temperature needs – they like it warm! Seeing Rico settle in and show off his spunky personality – he's such a curious explorer! – makes all the preparation worth it. It’s been an absolute joy welcoming this little guy into my life, and I can't wait to share more of our adventures. If you're thinking about a hedgehog, be prepared for endless cuteness and a truly unique pet experience!
