Okay, so my niece Olive and I had the most unexpected adventure at Kennywood the other day! We were just enjoying the rides and atmosphere when she suddenly pointed to this really striking insect. It was a Lanternfly! You know, those bugs everyone's talking about. Initially, I thought, 'Wow, is this the famous 'blue lantern fly' I've heard people searching for?' But as we took a moment to LOOK CLOSER, its true colors really stood out. The Spotted Lanternfly, which is what we found, actually has these gorgeous, complex patterns. Its forewings are usually a speckled grey with black spots, but then when it spreads its wings, you see flashes of vibrant red, black, and white on the hindwings! It's truly a sight to behold, very different from the bright blue colors you might associate with some other lantern bugs, like those fascinating Pyrops species from Asia. So while it wasn't strictly 'blue,' its unique coloration certainly made it feel just as special and eye-catching. Finding it made me realize how important it is to recognize these creatures. The Spotted Lanternfly, or what some people might mistakenly refer to as a 'NORTHERN LANTERNFLY' because of its spread in our region, is actually an invasive species. It's originally from Asia and has made its way to parts of the US, including Pennsylvania where Kennywood is located. These planthoppers feed on a wide variety of plants, including important agricultural crops like grapes, apples, and hops, as well as trees like maples, walnuts, and even ornamental plants. They extract sap from plants, weakening them and making them more susceptible to disease. Their feeding also produces a sticky 'honeydew' that coats surfaces below, leading to the growth of sooty mold, which can further harm plants and make outdoor spaces unpleasant. This extensive damage is why there's such a big push to identify and manage them. It's not just about the striking adult form. These bugs go through several life stages, and knowing what to LOOK CLOSER for at each stage is key. The egg masses, often laid in late fall, look like a smear of mud or dried putty on trees, rocks, outdoor furniture, or even vehicles. Then come the nymphs in spring, which are initially black with white spots (first to third instars), and later turn bright red with black and white spots (fourth instar) before becoming adults in late summer. Each stage looks so different! If you ever find yourself at a park like Kennywood, or just out in your backyard, it's worth taking a moment to scan tree trunks, outdoor furniture, or even your car for these guys. They're surprisingly good at blending in, especially the egg masses, so a keen eye is definitely needed. If you do spot one, especially an adult, the general advice is to report it to your local agricultural extension service or state department of agriculture. This helps track their spread and enables authorities to implement control measures. And, if you're in an infested area, you should also destroy them. I know it sounds harsh for a 'cool bug,' but it's really important for protecting our local ecosystem and agriculture. Squashing them, scraping egg masses, or using sticky traps (with safeguards against other animals) are often recommended methods, as they can quickly spread and reproduce. It's a small action that can make a big difference in preventing further devastation to our plants and industries. This experience certainly turned our fun day at Kennywood into a bit of a nature lesson. It just goes to show, sometimes the most interesting discoveries happen when you least expect them. So next time you're out and about, remember to LOOK CLOSER at the world around you. You never know what amazing (or important!) creatures you might find, even if they aren't exactly the 'blue lantern fly' you were searching for, but still need our attention!
