Six Of Crows

“No Mourners No Funerals”

I have spent years hearing and seeing a lot of amazing reviews about the book known as #sixofcrows by #leighbardugo and upon reading I was no disappointed! The book had what feels like everything from amazing fantasy world building and major #dystopian vibes! Without giving to much away the book follows a dysfunctional group of young criminals who are tasked to go on an impossible heist. It’s #dualpointofview so you get to see the story unravel in the eyes of each character and we get to see relationships grow and fall apart as the story goes!

My favorite part were the call backs to #leighbardugo ‘s #shadownandbone trilogy which helped set up the stage for the story of the crows and the world known as the #grishaverse ! I highly recommend this story and definitely recommend if you love a good plot twist <3

... Read moreOkay, so you've heard my general excitement, but let's dive a little deeper into why Six of Crows is such a standout read, especially if you're curious about the characters that make this book shine. One of the biggest draws for me was the incredible cast of characters, each with their own complex backstory and unique skills. Let's talk about Nina Zenik, for instance. She's a powerful Heartrender, a Grisha with the ability to manipulate bodies, and her wit, fierce loyalty, and often sarcastic humor make her absolutely unforgettable. You see her navigating incredibly tough situations, often with a cutting remark, but beneath it all, she's surprisingly compassionate. Her dynamic with Matthias Helvar is a highlight, a true enemies-to-lovers trope executed perfectly that adds so much emotional depth to the story. The book truly excels at showcasing these young criminals – many of them barely out of their teens – who are forced to make impossible choices. These aren't just one-dimensional bad guys; they're survivors, each driven by their own demons and desires, striving for something better, or at least a bigger score in the dangerous city of Ketterdam. The 'impossible heist' isn't just a catchy phrase; it truly feels insurmountable. They're tasked with infiltrating an impenetrable fortress known as the Ice Court, and every step of the plan is fraught with danger and requires incredible ingenuity. What makes it so compelling is seeing how this diverse group, often at odds with each other, has to rely on each other's strengths and cover each other's weaknesses. Kaz Brekker, the leader, is a master strategist, but even he needs his crew. It's the ultimate 'found family' story, where bonds are forged under the most extreme pressure and loyalty is earned through shared hardship. And for those wondering about the Grishaverse connection: while Six of Crows is set in the same world as the Shadow and Bone trilogy, you absolutely don't need to have read those books first! Bardugo does an amazing job of seamlessly introducing the world of Grisha, magic, and political intrigue without overwhelming new readers. It actually serves as a fantastic entry point into the Grishaverse, offering a darker, grittier perspective on this magical world. The world-building is so rich and atmospheric, I can completely understand why it inspires so much fan art and discussion – you can practically visualize Ketterdam's dark alleys and bustling harbors. The 'No mourners, no funerals' motto isn't just a cool phrase from the book's opening; it encapsulates the crew's cynical yet resilient spirit perfectly. It’s a powerful declaration of their loyalty and defiance in a world that often deals in betrayal. If you love intricate plots, morally grey characters, and a heist that keeps you on the edge of your seat, trust me, you'll be obsessed with this one!
