Many parents fall into the trap of comparing their family’s progress or achievements with others, which can lead to unnecessary stress and feelings of inadequacy. The idea of the "comparison test" in family therapy highlights how this habit can undermine parental confidence and harm family dynamics. Instead of viewing others’ successes as benchmarks, it's important to recognize that every family evolves differently and at its own pace. Another concept to watch out for is "parental overvaluation," where parents overestimate their children’s skills or progress because of emotional attachment or pressure, which can distort expectations and lead to comparison. Similarly, the "stacking the deck fallacy" refers to selectively focusing on information that supports unfair comparisons, further feeding into negative feelings. Through my own experience, embracing the belief that "every journey is different" has been transformative. Accepting your unique circumstances and focusing on the love that binds your family nurtures confidence, reduces anxiety, and makes the parenting journey more fulfilling. Instead of competing with others, celebrate your own milestones and cherish the growth you witness in your family every day.
