PreK Living Science Lab
I am SO excited about this Living Science Lab I made in my classroom. The kids are going to be observing, predicting, asking questions, building vocabulary AND tasting plants they help grow. We are also going to plant some flowers and other vegetables in our outside garden. Im anxious to see how the microgreens grow in the Water Garden.
Creating an immersive Living Science Lab for PreK students offers a fantastic opportunity to cultivate curiosity and develop critical thinking skills at an early age. From my experience, incorporating multiple sensory activities like observing plants’ growth stages, predicting outcomes, and tasting freshly grown vegetables deepens children’s connection to nature and science. One effective tool is the Water Garden, which combines an indoor fish tank ecosystem with plant growth, giving kids a vivid understanding of plant roots, water’s role, and aquatic life interactions. Using seed cups labeled SEED CUP 1, 2, and 3 supports hands-on learning where children can track plant growth stage-by-stage and practice scientific vocabulary with terms like leaves, roots, and water. Providing magnifying glasses and observation sheets encourages detailed examination and reflection. Introducing vocabulary cards and rulers helps bridge scientific concepts with literacy skills, reinforcing word recognition and measurement basics. Additionally, allowing children to taste plants they help grow adds an engaging, memorable experience that promotes healthy eating and an appreciation for food sources. In outdoor settings, planting flowers and vegetables in a garden complements indoor experiments and connects classroom lessons to the natural environment. I have found that this blended environmental approach offers varied learning stimuli that sustain young students’ enthusiasm for science. By fostering inquiry through questions like "What do you notice about the roots?" or "How does water help the plants grow?" educators nurture observation and reasoning skills essential to scientific learning. This approach also aligns well with sustainability education, as children see firsthand how living systems work together. Overall, setting up a Living Science Lab with accessible materials such as seed sponges and simple filtration systems engages PreK students in meaningful, joyful discovery that supports their holistic development.
