Wisconsin winter
I live in Wisconsin. This is my winter outfit!*
Ok, full disclosure, I do usually wear a coat when I’m outside. But, to paraphrase Elsa, the cold doesn’t bother me anyway. And come on, it was a whole 11° outside. With a -7° real feel, but whatever.
Come on fellow Wisconsinites, can I get a “heck yeah” from you guys?
*For about 1 minute this morning.

Okay, fellow cold-weather warriors, let's get real about Wisconsin winters. While my original post might have been a bit cheeky about ditching the coat (for a minute, anyway!), surviving these chilly months – especially when that 'real feel' dips way below zero – is all about smart dressing. And trust me, I've learned a thing or two about building the perfect Wisconsin winter outfit that's both cozy and cute! First things first: layering is your absolute best friend. It’s not just a suggestion; it’s a survival strategy. I always start with a good base layer. Think thermal leggings and a long-sleeved thermal top. They might feel a bit bulky at first, but they trap warmth close to your body and make a huge difference. On top of that, I’ll usually throw on a cozy sweater – wool or fleece is ideal here because they’re fantastic insulators. Next up, the outer layer. Forget those flimsy fashion coats; we need serious protection here. My go-to is a good quality, insulated parka with a hood. Look for features like waterproof or water-resistant outer shells (because snow eventually turns to slush!) and down or synthetic insulation. A hood is crucial for protecting your ears and face from the biting wind. Don't underestimate how much heat you lose through your head! Let's not forget the extremities. A warm hat that covers your ears is non-negotiable. I have a collection of beanies, but a fleece-lined one is my ultimate savior. As for hands, mittens are actually warmer than gloves because your fingers share body heat. But if you need dexterity, insulated gloves are fine. And for your feet? Wool socks are a must! They wick away moisture and keep your toes toasty. Pair them with waterproof, insulated boots with good traction – those icy sidewalks are no joke. When it comes to putting a whole look together, I often think about practicality first, then add my personal style. For a casual day running errands, I might wear my thermal leggings under jeans, a chunky knit sweater, my parka, a cute beanie, and my trusty waterproof boots. If I'm heading out for something a bit nicer, I might opt for fleece-lined tights under a skirt or dress, paired with knee-high insulated boots, a cashmere sweater, and a stylish wool coat (still warm, but a step up from the parka). One trick I've picked up is to always have a scarf handy. Not only does it add a pop of color or texture to your outfit, but it's amazing for sealing off any drafts around your neck and chest. A big, thick blanket scarf can even double as an extra layer if you find yourself unexpectedly chilly indoors. So, while I might occasionally brave the elements for a photo op, my everyday Wisconsin winter outfit is a carefully constructed fortress against the cold. It’s all about staying comfortable, healthy, and yes, looking good while you do it. What are your favorite Wisconsin winter outfit hacks? I'd love to hear them!
