... Read moreHey everyone! I’ve been on a really meaningful spiritual journey lately, and one of the things that’s helped me connect deeper with my faith is Bible journaling. Recently, I felt called to explore a topic that’s often discussed but sometimes misunderstood: the 7 Deadly Sins. You know, Lust, Greed, Pride, Envy, Wrath, Gluttony, and Sloth. I wanted to really understand what they mean in a biblical context and, more importantly, how to actively work against them in my daily life.
My approach was to dedicate a section of my spiral notebook to each sin. For each one, I didn't just list the sin; I focused on finding a contrasting virtue or positive action, and then rooted it in supporting Bible verses. It's truly amazing how much clarity you can gain when you write things down and connect them directly to scripture. This isn't about judgment, but about self-reflection and growth.
Let's take Lust, for example. It's often misunderstood as simply physical desire, but biblically, it encompasses an intense, uncontrolled craving for anything, often leading us away from God. The contrasting virtue I focused on was purity or self-control. For Gluttony, which is much more than just overeating – it’s about excessive indulgence in anything to the point of waste – I explored temperance and moderation. Looking at Greed, the insatiable desire for material wealth, I paired it with charity and generosity, reminding myself of the importance of selfless giving.
Then there’s Sloth, which isn't just laziness, but a spiritual apathy or indifference to one's spiritual well-being. It was a powerful reminder to seek diligence and zeal in my faith. Wrath, or uncontrolled anger, was contrasted with patience and forgiveness, helping me find ways to respond to frustration with grace. Envy, the feeling of discontentment or resentment aroused by another's possessions, qualities, or luck, was a tough one. I paired it with kindness and gratitude, trying to shift my focus to appreciating what I have and celebrating others. Finally, Pride, often considered the root of all sins, the excessive belief in one's own importance or abilities, was met with humility. This involved reflecting on Proverbs 16:18: "Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall."
What I found most practical was that for each of these explanations, I didn't just define them. I actively sought out Bible verses that either warned against the sin or encouraged the corresponding virtue. This process of searching, reading, and then writing it out in my own words in my notebook really solidified my understanding. It turned abstract concepts into actionable insights. It's not just about knowing what the 7 deadly sins are, but how to actively cultivate a life filled with virtues instead. I truly believe that understanding these principles can empower us to make better choices and live a life that's more aligned with our faith. I hope sharing this little piece of my Bible journaling journey inspires you to explore these topics in your own way!
