Getting rid of fake locs to start with real hair (

2025/12/28 Edited to

... Read moreThinking about your own loc transformation, especially if you've been rocking false locs for a while? I totally get it! For years, false locs were my go-to. They offered a quick way to achieve a stylish, long-term look without the commitment of growing out natural locs. They can be amazing for protective styling, giving your natural hair a break, and trying out different lengths and colors without any permanent changes. Plus, the instant gratification of a full head of locs is hard to beat! However, after some time, I started feeling a pull towards something more authentic. My "false locs" felt less like me and more like a temporary style. I missed the feeling of my own hair, and I was curious about embarking on a genuine 'loc journey'. This decision often comes down to personal growth and wanting to connect more deeply with your natural hair. For me, it was about embracing my true texture and the beauty of natural loc development. If you're considering making the switch, the first step is often the removal process. My advice? Be patient and gentle! Depending on the type of false locs you have (braided, crocheted, etc.), removal can take time. I found it helpful to section my hair, use a good conditioner or detangling spray, and work slowly from the ends up. Rushing can cause breakage, which is the last thing you want when you're preparing for a new beginning. Once the false locs are out, your natural hair might feel a bit delicate or dry, so a deep conditioning treatment is a must. Then comes the exciting part: starting your real hair locs! This is where a good loctician becomes your best friend. They can help you decide on the right method (coils, braids, two-strand twists), and more importantly, create those neat, consistent partings. The initial installation, as shown in my journey, sets the foundation for your entire loc journey. Those first few retwists are crucial for shaping your locs. It truly is a 'loc management' art form. Be prepared for the 'ugly' phases – trust me, every loc journey has them! Your locs will bud, frizz, and sometimes look a bit wild. Patience is key. Regular washing, moisturizing, and retwists (but not too often!) are essential for healthy growth. Remember, starting real hair locs is not just a style change; it's a commitment and a beautiful process of self-discovery. Seeing your hair transform from those initial small twists into mature, strong locs is incredibly rewarding. It's a journey, not a race. Embrace every stage!
