Living with Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (CAIS) has been a deeply personal journey of understanding and self-acceptance. I can relate profoundly to the courage it takes to openly discuss intersex experiences, as many people, including myself at one point, keep these parts of their identity private—even from close family. The silence surrounding intersex conditions often stems from societal misunderstandings and fears, but sharing our stories is a powerful way to change that narrative. I’m 57 years old and have three grown children, and only recently felt ready to open up about my experience publicly. It’s not about dwelling on negativity, but rather about telling my truth in a way that highlights strength and the resilience many intersex people embody. Many of us face unique medical, emotional, and social challenges, yet our stories often go unheard, contributing to feelings of invisibility in both the medical field and society. Representation truly matters. When intersex voices are included within the broader LGBTQI community, it helps foster understanding and reduces stigma. Conversations tagged with #keeptalking allow us to connect, support each other, and educate those around us. By sharing our journeys—whether related to identity, medical decisions, or family conversations—we help create a more inclusive environment where future generations can feel seen and accepted without fear. It’s important to recognise that being intersex is not synonymous with misery. Like anyone else, intersex individuals have a wide range of experiences and emotions. My story is one of empowerment and visibility, encouraging others to find their voice at their own pace.
