Let’s Split These Ferns 🌱
Ferns are a multiplying plant! So, instead of buying 4 ferns this year. I’m buying 2 & splitting them! #outsideplants #ferns #gardening
Having personally tried splitting ferns to expand my plant collection, I can say it’s both rewarding and economical. Ferns naturally propagate well with division, especially during their active growth period in spring or early summer. To split a fern, gently remove the plant from its pot or ground, then use a clean, sharp tool to cut horizontally through the root ball, ensuring each section has healthy roots and fronds. After cutting, repot each division in fresh, well-draining soil and water them thoroughly. Keep the divided plants in a shaded, humid environment to reduce transplant shock. One important tip is to avoid over-cutting; each division should have enough roots and leaves to support itself, which helps reduce stress and encourages faster regrowth. Over time, these separated ferns will mature and can even be split again. This method not only saves money but also promotes healthier plants by preventing overcrowding. In my experience, labeling each new pot and keeping track of watering schedules helps maintain healthy growth. Splitting your ferns this way is an excellent way to cultivate lush greenery for your garden or indoor space with minimal effort and cost.
