But after many trials (and some sticky, burnt messes!), I've truly perfected my stovetop method. It's actually quite simple once you understand a few key principles. First, let's talk about washing your rice. The OCR mentioned washing until the water is clear, and it's a game-changer! This step removes excess starch, which is what often leads to sticky, clumpy rice. I usually rinse my rice about 3-4 times, gently agitating it with my hand, until the water draining from the pot is no longer milky. Some people skip this, but trust me, it makes all the difference for fluffy grains. The OCR also mentioned heating the rice a bit before washing – I've found this can sometimes help separate the grains, but vigorous washing is the most crucial part. Next, water ratio is king, and it varies slightly depending on the type of rice. For most white rice, like basmati or jasmine, a 1:1.5 or 1:2 rice-to-water ratio works wonders (e.g., 1 cup rice to 1.5-2 cups water). The OCR suggests adding water “just a little bit above the level of the rice,” which is a great visual trick if you don't have precise measuring tools. For brown rice, which those low-click queries mentioned, you'll need more water and a longer cooking time. I usually go with a 1:2.5 ratio (1 cup brown rice to 2.5 cups water) to ensure it gets fully cooked and tender.
