Matthew 7:12 🤍

Day 9, Matthew 7:12

“Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.“

Notes from my Bible:

This is commonly known as the Golden Rule. In many religions it is stated negatively: "Don't do to others what you don't want done to you." By stating it positively, Jesus made it more significant. It is not very hard to refrain from harming others; it is much more difficult to take the initiative in doing something good for them. The Golden Rule, as Jesus formulated it, is the foundation of active goodness and mercy - the kind of love God shows to us every day.

My Notes:

This can be so tough sometimes! When someone hurts you, it's much easier to back away and separate yourself from them. But imagine if Jesus did this! We are sinners, and we hurt him often, if not daily. I'm beyond thankful for his endless love and mercy!

... Read moreOkay, friends, for Day 9 of our March Bible Study, we’re diving deep into Matthew 7:12, a verse so profound it’s earned the title of ‘The Golden Rule.’ But have you ever truly pondered why it’s called golden? It's more than just a nice ethical guideline; it's the very heart of how we're called to live our lives, reflecting God's immense love and mercy. The beauty of Matthew 7:12, as the verse states, is its positive command: 'Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you.' This is a crucial distinction. Many ancient philosophies and even other religious texts offer a 'negative' version – 'Do not do to others what you would not want done to you.' While avoiding harm is important, Jesus elevates this principle. He challenges us to go beyond mere avoidance and to actively seek the good of others, to initiate kindness, compassion, and support. It's about being proactive in love, not just reactive in refraining from negativity. I find myself often returning to this verse in my own daily life, especially when faced with difficult situations. My personal notes often reflect on how incredibly tough it can be to extend grace or actively do good for someone who might have hurt me, or simply rubbed me the wrong way. It feels so natural to retreat, to build walls, or to let resentment fester. But then I remember the boundless love and mercy that God continually showers upon us, despite our own imperfections and frequent failings. If Jesus hadn't taken the initiative to love us first, where would we be? This realization usually brings me back to the core of the Golden Rule. So, how do we practically live out this 'active goodness' that Matthew 7:12 champions? It starts with empathy. I try to genuinely put myself in another person's shoes. If I were in their situation, what would I need? How would I want to be spoken to, treated, or helped? It might mean offering a heartfelt compliment to a stranger, volunteering a helping hand without being asked, choosing patience in a frustrating moment, or offering sincere forgiveness even when it feels undeserved. For example, instead of just not being rude to a tired cashier, I choose to smile, make eye contact, and thank them genuinely. Or, when I hear gossip, instead of just not joining in, I actively try to steer the conversation elsewhere or speak a kind word about the person being discussed. This isn't always easy, and it definitely requires a daily surrender and a reliance on God's strength. But when we commit to living by this principle, we're not only sharing God's love with the world, but we're also transforming our own hearts. It's a continuous journey of growth, learning to embrace vulnerability and extend grace, just as we've received it. This divine principle truly is 'the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets,' guiding us to live a life that honors God and blesses those around us. Let's remember these powerful 'Notes Below' and strive to embody the Golden Rule in every interaction.
