So many people ask me, 'Is it really possible to go boating with cats?' And my answer is always a resounding YES! Seeing Rocco, my handsome Orange Maine Coon, so comfortable and happy on our boat truly makes life better. But it wasn't just smooth sailing from day one; it took a bit of planning and patience. First off, preparation is absolutely key. Before we ever set sail with Rocco, we made sure he was up-to-date on all his vaccinations and had a microchip. I also highly recommend getting your cat comfortable with a harness and leash before you even think about putting them on a boat. This makes it so much safer for those times they might want to explore the dock or a new island. Think about their essential gear: a sturdy, comfortable carrier for transport, their favorite food and treats, and plenty of fresh water. Safety on the water is paramount. While Rocco is quite good, we still have a custom-fitted cat life vest for him – just in case. We also installed netting around certain areas of the boat to prevent any accidental tumbles overboard. It’s also wise to have a 'safe space' for your cat, like a cozy bed in a quiet corner, where they can retreat if they feel overwhelmed by the motion or new sounds. This is especially important during storms or heavy seas. Introducing Rocco to the boat was a gradual process. We started by bringing him aboard when the boat was docked, letting him explore at his own pace with familiar blankets and toys. Consistency in routine helps immensely. We keep his litter box in a well-ventilated, accessible spot – and trust me, choosing the right type of litter that minimizes odor and tracking in a small space is a game-changer! We also ensure he has a designated scratching post to save our upholstery. Living on a boat presents unique challenges. On sunny days, I'm always mindful of Rocco getting too much sun, so shaded spots are a must. Feeding times are consistent, and we always have fresh water bowls that are heavy enough not to tip over with boat movement. Sometimes, passing wildlife like birds or fish can be very exciting for him, so keeping him secure is important. Dealing with the litter box in a confined space requires frequent cleaning, but it’s a small price to pay for his companionship. Despite the considerations, the joys of having a boat cat like Rocco are immense. He's such a curious companion, always watching the water and sometimes even 'fishing' for leaves that float by. The bond we've built sharing these unique adventures is truly special. It's not just a boat; it's our floating home, and Rocco is an integral part of our crew.
