This week, my 7th-grade students shared some unforgettable quotes that perfectly encapsulate their vibrant personalities. For instance, one student joked about friendship dynamics: "YOU AND MY MOM WOULD BE VERY GOOD FRIENDS... WHICH WOULD BE VERY BAD FOR ME". This playful insight speaks volumes about the complex social interactions typical at this age. Another highlight was a comment referencing birth methods, showcasing their innocent yet blunt understanding of reality: "YOU CAME OUT BAD. YOUR MOM HAD A C- SECTION". Such remarks often lead to laughter in the classroom, reminding us of the creative ways students interpret their experiences. Students also tend to reflect on their identity and their relationships with friends, as seen in the statement: "YOU'RE MY BEST FRIEND. WELL... YOUR CATS ARE". This humor illustrates their quirky priorities and camaraderie. Additionally, a candid admission regarding shoe-tying skills was shared: "I FORGOT HOW TO ΤΙΕ MY SHOES BECAUSE I WORE CROCS ALL SUMMER... MY MOM HAD TO RETEACH ME", providing a glimpse into the life lessons they're tackling. Within the classroom environment, students often express their thoughts about their teachers as well. A gentle inquiry posed to me was: "MS KIRTLAND, DO YOU HAVE FRIENDS? AND IF YOU DO, DO YOU LIKE THEM?" This question is a classic example of their innocent curiosity, and it certainly lightened the atmosphere during a busy school week. Overall, moments like these highlight the humor and authenticity of middle schoolers, making teaching just as rewarding as it is challenging.
