Students still savoring summer?

🌞This bundle pairs two fully-designed, print-and-go stations activities — one poetry, one nonfiction — that together give students a complete close reading experience across literary and informational texts. Both are built on the same easy-to-run, 45-minute, four-station structure, so your planning stays simple while your instruction stays rich.

📚What's included:

☀️ Summer Poetry Stations — Close Reading & Literary Analysis

Students rotate through four published Summer poems — Paul Laurence Dunbar, Robert Louis Stevenson, Sara Teasdale, and Emily Dickinson — analyzing imagery, figurative language, tone, and form, with a short creative-writing task at every station. All four poems are in the public domain.

☀️ Summer Informational Text Stations — Close Reading & Rhetorical Analysis

Students rotate through four original nonfiction passages — the science of the solstice, the history of Summer vacation, the secret life of fireflies, and an argument for Summer boredom — analyzing central idea, text structure, word choice, author's purpose, and argument, with a quick write at every station. All four passages are original texts.

📚Each activity includes:

✔ Teacher guide with objectives, CCSS alignment, pacing, differentiation, and facilitation tips

✔ 4 printable, color-coded station cards

✔ Student response packet — warm-up, 6 text-dependent questions per station, and a writing task at every stop

✔ Exit slip for formative assessment

✔ Teaching notes with suggested responses

💪Standards Alignment (CCSS ELA-Literacy):

RL.9-10.1, 2, 4, 5 | RI.9-10.1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8 | W.9-10.4 | SL.9-10.1

🎯Perfect for:

The last weeks before Summer break • End-of-year close reading review • A poetry + nonfiction mini-unit • Summer school • Literary & rhetorical analysis practice • 9th–10th grade ELA

🍎Run them back-to-back across two to four class periods for a complete summer reading mini-unit, or use each independently. Either way, students leave with stronger analytical skills across both text types — and you get two no-prep, high-rigor lessons in one download. 45-90 minutes each, depending upon your students. PDF.

💡 Better together:

Buy the bundle and save versus purchasing each activity separately.

... Read moreAs a teacher, I found that incorporating thematic units like this Summer Stations Bundle really helps maintain student engagement, especially in the weeks leading up to summer break. The combination of poetry and informational texts allows students to flex different analytical muscles — examining figurative language and tone in poems by Dunbar, Stevenson, Teasdale, and Dickinson, while also digging into nonfiction passages covering fascinating topics like the science of the solstice and the history of summer vacation. Using the four-station setup made classroom management smooth and ensured every student rotated through activities efficiently without losing focus. The color-coded station cards and detailed teacher guides made prep effortless, which is a lifesaver during busy times. I also appreciated the inclusion of formative assessment exit slips and suggested responses, which helped me gauge understanding on the spot and tailor follow-up discussions. The creative-writing prompts at each station encouraged my students to connect personally with the material, leading to some insightful responses about what summer means to them. For students who typically avoid poetry, the blend of literary and informational texts provides balance and builds confidence in close reading skills. Overall, teaching this summer mini-unit twice across several class periods enhanced my students’ analytical skills and gave them a fresh appreciation for seasonal themes in literature and nonfiction alike. I highly recommend this resource for educators looking to keep instruction rich and interactive, with minimal preparation required.
