Some of the most powerful people on LinkedIn are ruining their own opportunities in the first five seconds of a DM.
Not because they aren’t smart.
Not because they don’t have something valuable to say.
But because they forgot there’s a human being on the other side of the screen.
Yesterday, a woman connected with me and immediately dropped a link to her article into my inbox.
No hello.
No warmth.
No context.
No “thank you for connecting.”
Just… a transaction.
And I sat there thinking:
We have forgotten the art of professional presence.
I don’t believe networking should feel like cold-calling someone at their kitchen table.
I believe connection is energy.
Intention.
Respect.
Especially now.
So instead of getting frustrated, I created a framework for how I believe we should approach LinkedIn DMs professionally, respectfully, and with emotional intelligence.
→ 1. Start with a personalized greeting
Use their name. Mention something specific. Let people feel seen, not harvested.
→ 2. Share your purpose early
Why are you reaching out? Curiosity is beautiful. Ambiguity is exhausting.
→ 3. Keep it concise & respectful
Nobody owes us their time. Clarity is kindness.
→ 4. Offer value before asking for anything
Insight. Encouragement. Perspective. Resourcefulness. Lead with contribution.
→ 5. Include a clear next step
A thoughtful question goes further than a sales pitch ever will.
→ 6. Respect their space
No response is still a response. Grace matters online too.
I think somewhere along the way, we started treating professional relationships like algorithms instead of actual people.
But the most magnetic professionals I’ve ever met?
They know how to make people feel comfortable.
Respected.
Considered.
That is a leadership skill.
And honestly… the older I get, the more I realize:
The room opens for people who know how to carry both ambition and humanity at the same time.
That combination is rare.
And unforgettable.
