Working on the second phase of the Everyday Object sculpture project truly deepened my appreciation for hands-on learning in art education. Using materials like paper mache allowed my students to explore texture and form in ways that traditional drawing or painting doesn't offer. I noticed how the soft sculpture techniques encouraged experimentation with different shapes and softness, helping students understand three-dimensional concepts better. One challenge we faced was managing the drying times for paper mache, which required careful planning to keep the project on schedule. I found it helpful to incorporate small group discussions during drying periods where students could share ideas and reflect on their work. This collaborative environment boosted creativity and peer learning. Incorporating everyday objects as the basis for the sculptures made the project relatable and accessible. Students enjoyed reimagining common items into art pieces, which sparked meaningful conversations about art in daily life. This project also worked well within the public school setting, demonstrating how resourceful and adaptable art education can be despite limited budgets. Overall, this experience reinforced my belief that sculpture projects like this engage multiple learning styles and foster critical thinking. Seeing the students’ pride in transforming simple materials into expressive artworks was incredibly rewarding, and I’m excited to continue expanding our sculpture explorations in future classes.
