The spring break life of a teacher

Wow, it's so true how fast spring break flies by! My original post focused a lot on the much-needed rest, but looking back, it's also about how we choose to recharge and what that really entails beyond just sleeping in. For me, embracing that ultimate 'spring mood' meant more than just hitting snooze. It was about creating a peaceful environment and doing things that truly filled my cup, so I could return to my high school classroom feeling genuinely refreshed. One thing I've learned is that 'self-care' for teachers during a break isn't just a buzzword; it's essential. It can be as simple as treating myself to a fresh bouquet of flowers from the local market – something that instantly brightens my space and brings a touch of nature indoors. It's a small act, but those little joys contribute so much to a feeling of peace. I even put together a little 'care pack' for myself this year: a new journal, some fancy tea, and a face mask. Sometimes, we're so busy caring for others, we forget to shower ourselves with that same kindness. During my quieter moments, I often find myself reflecting on the neighborhood and the community around me. While I didn't engage in formal service learning this break, I made an effort to support local businesses – grabbing coffee from the independent cafe down the street, or browsing the small bookstore. It's a subtle way of staying connected and appreciating the place I live and work. It reminds me of the diverse lives my students also lead in this community. And speaking of small joys, my small black dog was definitely a key player in my relaxation strategy! Extra long walks, more cuddles – pets have this incredible ability to ground you and remind you of simple pleasures. It’s a different kind of reflection that comes from just being present with them. I also took some time to experiment with my spring outfits. I love how a fresh, comfortable look can instantly lift your spirits. Finding the perfect casual top or comfy jeans for those relaxed days, as you might have seen in my mirror selfies, really helped me settle into that 'spring mood.' It's not about being fancy; it's about feeling good in your own skin, which totally contributes to a positive mindset for when you head back to school. Ultimately, for teachers on spring break, the goal is to return ready to tackle the challenges and joys of teaching. It’s a delicate balance of completely disconnecting and subtly preparing. By consciously incorporating elements like bringing in fresh flowers, creating personal care packs, reflecting on my neighborhood, and simply enjoying my furry friend, I felt much more holistically recharged. These aren't grand gestures, but they are meaningful ways to nurture myself so I can be the best version of myself for my amazing high school students until the next extended break.
