Produce guide storage

2024/7/24 Edited to

... Read moreI used to get so frustrated seeing my beautiful fresh produce go bad too quickly. It felt like I was constantly throwing away money! But after a lot of trial and error, I've discovered some amazing hacks that keep my fruits and veggies crisp and delicious for much longer. I'm excited to share my personal tips so you can avoid food waste too! First up, let's talk about carrots. My absolute favorite trick for whole carrots is storing them in a water container in the fridge. Just put them in a jar or container, cover them completely with water, and change the water every few days. They stay unbelievably crunchy for weeks! For cut carrots, or if I'm prepping them for snacks, an airtight container in the fridge works wonders. I sometimes add a damp paper towel to the bottom to absorb excess moisture. Leafy greens like spinach, kale, or lettuce used to be my biggest challenge. Now, after washing and thoroughly drying them (a salad spinner is a lifesaver!), I layer them with paper towels in an airtight container or a large zip-top bag before placing them in the crisper drawer of my refrigerator. The paper towels absorb any moisture, preventing them from getting slimy. This simple step has dramatically extended their life! And what about cucumbers? If I haven't cut them yet, I actually try to keep them out of the fridge for a few days, especially if I plan to eat them soon. They prefer a cool spot on the counter, away from direct sunlight. Once cut, though, they definitely need to go into an airtight container in the fridge to prevent drying out. Eggplant is another one that needs careful storage. I've learned that it's best to keep them in a cool, dark place, but not typically in the coldest part of my refrigerator, as they can get damaged by extreme cold. The crisper drawer is usually a good spot, but don't wash them until you're ready to use them! For fruit storage, I've found that using jars can be a game-changer for certain items. For instance, I wash and dry berries and grapes (as mentioned in my storage guide!), then store them loosely in glass jars in the fridge. This allows air circulation and keeps them from getting squished. Other fruits like apples also do great in the fridge, especially if you want them to last longer. Just make sure to keep fruits that emit ethylene gas (like bananas and ripe mangoes) away from ethylene-sensitive produce. Finally, for all my cut vegetables like broccoli florets or bell pepper strips, I always store them in airtight containers in the fridge. This keeps them fresh and ready for cooking or snacking, making meal prep so much easier. Remember, the key is often to keep moisture at bay for many veggies, but some, like carrots, love a good soak! Experiment to see what works best for each type of produce you love.
