'The challenge' of getting out for a run with kids and pets is real, but it's also incredibly rewarding! I often get asked how I manage to 'COME RUN WITH ME AND MY BOYS' (both furry and human!), so I wanted to share some tips that have helped me.
First off, set realistic expectations. My runs aren't always fast, and that's okay! There are days when we're just enjoying the fresh air, and other days when I'm pushing for a personal best. The goal is consistency, not perfection. Remember that feeling of accomplishment when your smartwatch displays running stats and you know 'WE DID IT!'? That's what keeps me going.
When it comes to running with a dog, especially a high-energy one like a husky, proper leash training is key. I make sure my dog is comfortable running beside the stroller. Using a hands-free leash can be a game-changer, allowing you to maintain better control of the stroller handle. Always pick dog-friendly routes and be mindful of the weather; hot pavement can hurt their paws. It's a journey, and some days it's 'JUST THE FURRY BABY NOW BUT WE'RE PICKING UP SPEED', while other days it's a slower pace.
Then there's the stroller factor! A good jogging stroller is an investment, but worth it. Make sure it's well-maintained and the tires are properly inflated. For my little one, I always pack snacks, water, and a few toys to keep him entertained. Sometimes, we do a 'BABY/DOG SWAP' mid-run, where one gets a break or a different pace, and that flexibility helps a lot. Don't be afraid to take breaks if your little one gets fussy or your dog needs a water stop. It’s all part of the adventure.
Speaking of gear, a reliable jogging stroller is an absolute must. Look for features like good suspension, a five-point harness, and ample storage for all your essentials. I also find a water bottle holder on the stroller handle incredibly useful. For yourself, comfortable running shoes and moisture-wicking clothing are essential, especially when you're working up a sweat pushing a stroller in warmer weather. And don't forget the dog essentials: a sturdy harness and a portable water bowl.
One of the biggest 'challenges' is motivation. There will be days you just don't feel like it. On those days, I remind myself of the benefits: fresh air for all of us, a boost to my mental health, and setting a healthy example. Even a short run is better than no run. Seeing 'HERE WE GOOOO BABY BOY 2 BABY BOY 1' for a new adventure always lights a fire in me.
Finally, track your progress. Even if you're slowing down on some runs, note the distance, time, and how you felt. Small improvements over time add up. Celebrate every milestone, whether it's running an extra block or just making it out the door. Embracing this unique fitness journey, with all its 'challenges,' is what makes it so rewarding.
