Why The Cosby Show Still Holds Up

Some shows don’t just entertain us—they RAISE us. And for me? That show was The Cosby Show. A thread on why it still matters today.

1️⃣ First of all, if you grew up in the late 80s/90s, you KNOW that feeling when you heard that jazz-infused theme song. 🎶 You already knew you were about to get Black love, family, and legendary clapbacks from Clair Huxtable. ICONIC.

2️⃣ The Huxtables weren’t just a TV family, they were THE blueprint. I wasn’t just watching The Cosby Show—I was STUDYING it. It shaped how I saw family, love, and success. I even own the DVDs just in case they ever try to take it off the air. (Yes, I’m serious.)

3️⃣ Cliff & Clair’s marriage? GOALS. My Pawpaw & Nana were MY Huxtables. The way my Pawpaw adored my Nana—holding her hand, kissing her forehead, hyping her up? That’s how I knew I would never settle.

4️⃣ Clair Huxtable was THAT WOMAN. A strong, brilliant, no-nonsense Black queen who loved her family fiercely. The way she got Vanessa together after that Wretched concert? Whew.

5️⃣ My daughter once told me, “Sometimes you’re beauty, sometimes you’re the beast.” Listen… I gentle parent until my inner Clair Huxtable has to clock in.

6️⃣ Beyond family, The Cosby Show instilled Black pride in me.

✔️ Cliff always wore HBCU sweatshirts before I even knew what an HBCU was.

✔️ The guest stars were Black legends.

✔️ They spent THOUSANDS on Black art because they valued it. That stuck with me.

7️⃣ My favorite episodes? TOO MANY TO COUNT.

• Rudy’s tap dancing challenge. (That “CHALLENGE!” scene still kills me.)

• Russell Huxtable’s trombone reunion. (Black legacy at its finest.)

• And of course, Vanessa’s Wretched concert downfall.

8️⃣ Now I’m passing the tradition down to my kids. My daughter London (16) has her fave episodes. Cairo (6) just started watching at night before bed. The Cosby Show is now a FAMILY thing.

9️⃣ In a world where media loves to focus on Black trauma, The Cosby Show reminded us that Black families THRIVE. We need more of that.

🔟 If you ever loved this show, go rewatch it today. And if you want to know why I’ll ALWAYS be an honorary Huxtable, I broke it all down in my blog. 👇🏾
