Steel’s first bath from mommy

After I got home from the hospital, I would ask their dad to stand by me when I wanted to bathe them because I was so lightheaded and sometimes my thoughts would get jumbled so I was afraid I might have a seizure or hurt them. For example, right here I was repeating in my head, “not on the face” when pouring the water because it felt like my right hand was trying to pour it on his face. Thankfully that stopped when the doctor took me off Keppra. #oneofthescariesttimesofmylife #twins

... Read moreGiving your newborn their first bath at home is one of those precious milestones that can feel incredibly exciting, but also a little nerve-wracking! I certainly remember feeling a mix of pure joy and a bit of apprehension. It’s totally normal to feel a bit clumsy or unsure, especially when you’re dealing with a tiny, slippery human for the first time. But trust me, with a little preparation and a gentle touch, you'll both get through it beautifully. Getting Ready: My Top Tips for a Smooth Bath Time Before you even think about water, preparation is your best friend. I always made sure to gather everything I needed within arm's reach – seriously, don't leave your baby unattended for even a second. Here’s my go-to checklist: A Safe Spot: I used a dedicated baby bathtub, but a clean, padded sink works too. Make sure it’s sturdy and won’t slip. Warmth is Key: Ensure the room is nice and warm, about 75-78°F (24-26°C), so your little one doesn't get chilly when they come out of the water. Water Temperature: This is crucial! Fill the tub with just a few inches of lukewarm water, around 90-100°F (32-38°C). Always test it with your wrist or elbow – it should feel comfortably warm, not hot. Gentle Cleansers: A mild, fragrance-free baby soap and shampoo are all you need. Less is often more with sensitive newborn skin. Soft Towels: Have two soft, hooded towels ready. One to quickly wrap them in, and another to gently pat them dry. Fresh Essentials: A clean diaper, a fresh outfit, and any diaper cream or lotion you typically use. A Helping Hand (Optional but Recommended!): Like the original article mentions, having another adult nearby, especially for the very first few baths, can make a huge difference. Their presence can ease your nerves and provide an extra set of hands if needed. The Bathing Process: Gentle and Quick Remember, newborn baths don't need to be long; a quick 5-10 minute wash is usually plenty. Undress and Support: Gently undress your baby. If it's a sponge bath because the umbilical cord hasn't fallen off yet, just expose the area you're cleaning. When putting them in the tub, always support their head and neck with one hand. They’re super wiggly! Face First: I always started with their face, using a soft, damp washcloth – no soap needed here. Be extra careful around their eyes, just wiping from the inner corner outwards. I remember repeating "not on the face" in my head, focusing on gentle, controlled movements. Top to Bottom: Work your way down. Use a pea-sized amount of baby shampoo for their hair, gently massaging it in and rinsing carefully (avoiding eyes again!). Then, use a little soap on the washcloth to clean their body, paying special attention to creases under their arms, behind the ears, and in their neck and diaper area. Rinse Thoroughly: Make sure to rinse off all the soap. You can cup your hand and pour water over them gently, or use a clean, damp washcloth. Umbilical Cord Care: If the cord stump is still attached, remember to keep it dry and clean. Sponge baths are best until it falls off naturally. After the Bath: Warmth and Cuddles As soon as you lift your baby out, immediately wrap them in a warm, hooded towel. Pat them dry gently – don't rub, as their skin is delicate. Apply a gentle baby lotion if their skin is dry, then put on a fresh diaper and clothes. This is my favorite part: cuddling your clean, sweet-smelling baby! It's an amazing bonding experience. Don't worry if your baby cries a little; some newborns aren't big fans of baths at first. Just keep talking to them softly and make it as quick and gentle as possible. Every parent's first bath experience is unique, and you're doing great! Soon enough, bath time will become a cherished part of your routine.
