📖 Reading of the Day: Obedience — Going Up A Down Street

Jonah 1:1–17

Sometimes in life we find ourselves going in the complete opposite direction of what we know we were called to do. That’s exactly what Jonah did. God told him to go to Nineveh… and Jonah went the other way. Literally boarded a ship headed in the opposite direction. 🚢

But what really stood out in this reading is that Jonah’s disobedience didn’t just affect Jonah — it affected everyone around him. The sailors on that ship found themselves in the middle of a violent storm they didn’t create. They were throwing cargo overboard, fearing for their lives, and praying to their own gods… all because one man chose to run from what God told him to do.

That’s a powerful reminder that our choices don’t live in isolation. When we move in obedience, it can bless others. But when we move in disobedience, it can create storms that innocent people get caught in.

And if we’re honest, most of us have had a “Jonah moment” at some point in life. A time when we knew what direction we were supposed to go… but fear, pride, hurt, or just plain stubbornness had us going the other way. Down a street we already knew was headed the wrong direction. 🚧

I’ve learned that when you try to outrun purpose, life has a way of shaking the boat until you come back to yourself. Not always to punish you, but to realign you. Sometimes those storms are simply God’s way of turning the ship around.

So today’s reflection is simple: be mindful of the direction you’re walking in. When you choose to live this thing called life through God — or however you acknowledge your Most High — obedience matters. Not just for you, but for the people connected to you.

Because sometimes going “your way” might actually be going up a down street.

And eventually… every down street runs out of road. 🛑

... Read moreReflecting on Jonah's story, I've realized that disobedience often leads us down difficult paths—not just for ourselves but for others too. In my own experience, there were times when fear or stubbornness made me resist following the direction I felt was right, much like Jonah boarding a ship in the opposite direction of Nineveh. This resistance didn't just cause inner turmoil but also affected my relationships and environment, creating confusion and distress around me. What helped me was understanding that these 'storms' in life are often signs guiding us back to our true purpose rather than punishments. Like the sailors in Jonah's story, people around us might experience challenges because of our choices, even if indirectly. Recognizing this interconnectedness encouraged me to be more mindful and intentional about my decisions. Obedience, in a broader sense, aligns us with a higher purpose—whether we interpret that spiritually or as following deeply held personal values. It's about moving in the right direction, even when it's uncomfortable or uncertain, trusting that this path blesses not only ourselves but the community connected to us. So, if you ever find yourself going "up a down street," as described in the reflection, remember that it's never too late to pause, realign, and steer the ship back towards the course meant for you. Life’s storms can be powerful catalysts for growth and realignment when we embrace them with openness and faith.

Ways you can start reading your Bible!
I know it can be hard to understand the Bible. And I know it can be hard to WANT to. But setting yourself up for success is key! Spending time in His word everyday is truly life changing. I used to just read once in a while or just the verse of the day.. but the Lord wants us to dive right in.
