Spiritual Disciplines: Giving Beyond Ourselves

📜 Psalm 112:1–10

Psalms has always been one of my favorite books of the Bible. I can’t even tell you exactly why (because there’s so much I love about many others), but since I was a little girl attending Vacation Bible School and Sunday School, I’ve always found myself drawn to it. ❤️ But that’s a story for another day… let’s get into today’s reading!

One thing immediately stood out to me in Psalm 112: generosity.

The words generous and generously appear repeatedly, including this powerful reminder:

“They share freely and give generously to those in need.” — Psalm 112:9

And that made me think: Generosity is a spiritual discipline.

We often think of spiritual disciplines as praying, fasting, studying our Bible, worshiping, or serving. But giving—especially giving beyond ourselves—requires discipline too.

Because let’s be truthful: generosity is easy when we have plenty. 💰 It’s easy to give when it doesn’t inconvenience us. But what happens when giving requires sacrifice? What happens during the lean season? What happens when we have to trust God while still being willing to bless somebody else?

That’s where the discipline comes in.

Scripture teaches us that our generosity should never simply come from pressure, guilt, recognition, or because somebody talked us into it. Our greatest example of generosity is God Himself, who gave us the indescribable gift of Jesus Christ. 🙌🏾

When we truly understand how generously God has given to us, our response should be a willingness to give beyond ourselves.

And giving isn’t always money.

Sometimes generosity looks like giving your time.

Sometimes it’s sharing your resources.

Sometimes it’s using your gifts and talents.

Sometimes it’s offering encouragement, knowledge, support, compassion, or simply showing up when somebody needs you.

Psalm 112 teaches us something else that I LOVE: the godly are blessed, but those blessings aren’t meant to stop with us. God can prosper us so that what He places in our hands can become a blessing to somebody else. 🙏🏾

And here’s the part that will preach all by itself:

The discipline of giving continues in the good days AND the hard days. The rich days AND the poor days. The bright days AND the dark days.

Generosity isn’t simply something we do when we have “extra.” It becomes part of who we are.

“All goes well for those who are generous, who lend freely and conduct their business fairly.” — Psalm 112:5

So today, I’m asking myself—and I’ll ask you too:

💭 Am I only grateful for what God has given me, or am I disciplined enough to ask how He wants me to use it to bless someone else?

We don’t have to give what we don’t have. God isn’t asking us to compete with anybody else’s ability. But according to what He has placed in our hands, we can choose to live generously.

Give cheerfully.

Give faithfully.

Give compassionately.

Give consistently.

And when God blesses you, don’t allow the blessing to end with you.

Be the blessing that keeps on blessing. ❤️🙏🏾

Because sometimes God puts more in our hands not simply to increase our standard of living, but to increase our standard of giving.

📖 Today’s spiritual discipline: Look beyond yourself. Ask God, “Who can I bless with what You have already placed in my hands?” Then be obedient enough to do it.

... Read moreReflecting on Psalm 112 and the concept of generosity as a spiritual discipline has deeply shaped the way I approach giving in my daily life. What stands out most is the reminder that generosity isn't meant to be conditional on abundance—it's meant to be a constant practice, regardless of our circumstances. From personal experience, I've found that giving beyond what feels comfortable becomes a transformative act, strengthening trust in God’s provision and expanding my compassion for others. One practical way I’ve embraced this discipline is by intentionally offering my time and skills to community projects or helping friends and neighbors in need. It's remarkable how sharing knowledge, encouragement, or simply showing up consistently can be equally impactful as financial giving. Psalm 112’s emphasis on giving freely and conducting ourselves fairly challenges me to approach generosity not just as charity, but as a way of living justly and joyfully. In lean seasons or when life feels uncertain financially, it’s tempting to hold back. Yet, practicing disciplined giving reminds me to lean on faith and understand that blessings are not only for personal gain but for enabling others to flourish. This mindset shift encourages me to reflect regularly on what God has entrusted to me—not merely possessions but also gifts of love, patience, and kindness—and to ask, "Who can I bless today?" This ongoing spiritual exercise of giving beyond ourselves nurtures humility and gratitude. It fosters a closer connection with God’s generosity, inspiring a grace-filled life that resonates with the essence of Psalm 112. Ultimately, generosity is not about the amount given, but about the heart and consistency behind it. This perspective has continuously helped me grow in faith and service, encouraging others to do the same by sharing their unique blessings in diverse and compassionate ways.

Ways you can start reading your Bible!
I know it can be hard to understand the Bible. And I know it can be hard to WANT to. But setting yourself up for success is key! Spending time in His word everyday is truly life changing. I used to just read once in a while or just the verse of the day.. but the Lord wants us to dive right in.
