Just recently, my amazing friend and I had the best time catching up and making new memories at Drunken Fish - Central West End. The Halloween decorations were out, setting such a fun, festive mood as we reminisced about old times and planned our next adventures. It's wild to think how many years have passed since those awkward middle school days!
People often ask what makes a friendship last so long, especially one that started when we were just figuring ourselves out. For us, it really boils down to a few core things. First, communication and cooperation are huge. We’ve learned to talk through everything, big or small, and support each other's decisions, even when they’re tough. It's not always easy, but being honest and understanding is the foundation. We also share so many interests, from pop culture crushes back in the day to discovering new hobbies now. That shared sense of humor has been a lifesaver, too – laughing until our stomachs hurt over inside jokes only we understand is still a favorite pastime.
Thinking about the characteristics that form the foundation for a healthy relationship, whether platonic or romantic, it strikes me how much these traits also apply to a strong friendship. While our bond isn't romantic, the principles are the same: mutual respect, open dialogue, a willingness to compromise, and genuinely enjoying each other's company. We’ve definitely established healthy personal boundaries over the years, which has allowed our friendship to grow stronger without feeling stifling. Knowing when to give each other space, but always being there when needed, is key. These elements are what transform a casual acquaintance into a lifelong 'friend since 7th grade' connection.
Maintaining a friendship that spans decades takes effort, but it's so worth it. Life gets busy, people move, priorities shift, but making time for each other is non-negotiable. Whether it’s a quick phone call, a thoughtful text, or planning a fun night out like our recent Halloween-themed dinner, those moments keep the connection alive. We might not see each other every week, but when we do, it feels like no time has passed at all. I remember one time in 7th grade, we had a silly fight over something so trivial, and we thought our friendship was over. But we talked it out, and that experience taught us the importance of resolving conflicts rather than letting them fester.
Looking at the pictures from our Drunken Fish outing, seeing my bestie in her comfy brown hoodie and ripped jeans, and me in my patterned top and boots, it just warms my heart. It reminds me of all the different phases we’ve gone through, the styles we've rocked (and sometimes regretted!), and how our personalities have evolved. But beneath it all, that core 'middle school best friend' bond remains. If you’re lucky enough to have a childhood friend, cherish them. They’re a living part of your history and a beautiful constant in your ever-changing life.
