Scrap quilt

I made this quilt in 2023. The blocks are all scraps that didn’t make it into the original quilts. #quilts #scrapquilts

... Read moreHey fellow quilters! There's something truly magical about a scrap quilt, isn't there? I just finished my latest one in 2023, and it's always such a rewarding experience to turn those leftover bits and bobs into something spectacular. For me, the beauty of a scrap quilt lies in its story – every piece has a memory from another project. When I started this particular quilt, my goal was to embrace the chaos and celebrate the diversity of my fabric stash. Instead of trying to make everything perfectly coordinated, I leaned into the idea of creating a truly vibrant scrap quilt. I found myself pulling out all sorts of fabrics, some with bold geometric patterns, others with quirky designs, and yes, even a few with subtle sci-fi symbols that I just couldn't bear to part with. It’s amazing how these seemingly disparate elements can come together to form a cohesive, intricate, and absolutely stunning pieced design. For those of you wondering how to tackle your own mountain of scraps, here are a few things I've learned: Don't be afraid to mix and match! Sometimes the most unexpected combinations create the most striking visual interest. I often lay out my diverse blocks on the floor or a design wall, shuffling them around until a pattern starts to emerge. It’s like a puzzle, but with fabric! Another tip is to consider a unifying element. Even with a wildly eclectic collection of scraps, a consistent background fabric or a strong border can really pull it all together. For this quilt, adding that bold red border was a game-changer. It helped frame all the busy patterns and gave the eye a place to rest, making the overall quilt feel more intentional and less chaotic. I often find inspiration in the scraps themselves. What kind of story do they tell? How can I arrange them to highlight their unique characteristics? Sometimes, a tiny piece of fabric with a really cool print can become the centerpiece of a block. It's about letting the fabric guide you, rather than forcing it into a preconceived notion. The best part about scrap quilting, for me, is the incredible satisfaction of giving new life to fabrics that might otherwise just sit in a bin. It's sustainable, creative, and results in a truly one-of-a-kind piece that reflects your quilting journey. If you’re a scrap quilt enthusiast like me, I highly encourage you to dive into your stash and see what wonders you can create. Every block is a little surprise, and the final quilt is always a joyful testament to creativity and resourcefulness. Happy quilting!

I’d like your opinion on what color sashing to use for this baby quilt, the bright orange or the lime green? I like both! This is a quilt as you go project so the sashings will go in between each block and around the outside to add the dark blue border. Currently the blocks measure 24” x 36”,
