APRE Upper Body: Pushing 115lbs (13 Reps) & 125lbs

Miami
2025/7/16 Edited to

... Read moreHey fitness fam! You saw my recent win hitting 115lbs for 13 reps and then pushing 125lbs for 8 on my upper body day – it’s all thanks to incorporating APRE into my routine! If you're wondering what APRE is and why it's such a game-changer for strength training, let me break it down for you. APRE, or Autoregulatory Progressive Resistance Exercise, is a fantastic method that adapts to your performance on a given day. Unlike traditional linear progression where you add a fixed amount of weight each week, APRE uses your performance in the first set to determine the weight for subsequent sets. This means if you're feeling strong, you lift more; if you're a bit fatigued, you lift a bit less but still get an effective workout. It's brilliant for consistent progress and preventing overtraining or undertraining. For my upper body workouts, especially when I'm aiming for big lifts like the bench press, APRE helps me push boundaries safely. It’s how I managed to hit those numbers: starting with a warm-up, then a set to failure around 6-10 reps (my 115 for 13 reps was a bonus!), then adjusting the weight for the next two sets based on that performance. This dynamic approach has been key to breaking through plateaus. Speaking of bench press, hitting 115lbs can feel like a significant milestone for many, and consistently pushing towards 125lbs requires focus. Here are a few tips that helped me: Focus on Form: Always prioritize proper form over heavy weight. Engage your lats, keep your feet firmly planted, and ensure a slight arch in your lower back. This protects your shoulders and back and allows for maximum power transfer. Progressive Overload (APRE style!): Don't be afraid to test your limits. With APRE, you're constantly challenging yourself based on your daily capacity, which naturally leads to progressive overload. Accessory Work: Don't neglect triceps, shoulders, and back exercises. Stronger supporting muscles directly translate to a stronger bench. Think overhead press, dumbbell rows, and triceps extensions. Nutrition & Recovery: This is non-negotiable. Fuel your body with adequate protein and carbs, and get enough sleep. Your muscles grow and repair when you rest, not when you're lifting. Mind-Muscle Connection: Really focus on feeling your chest muscles work during the lift. This can help improve activation and strength. Whether you're aiming for your first 115lbs bench or pushing past 125lbs, remember that consistency and smart training, like APRE, are your best friends. Keep tracking your reps and weights, listen to your body, and celebrate every small victory! You've got this!
