BUILDING THE BASE: Bench Press Volume (lbs)

Starting off the training session with some controlled volume work on the bench! I ran a quick 5 sets of 10, increasing the weight slightly each time to get a good feel for the bar path and speed. Keeping the reps crisp and consistent!

• Set 1: 75 lbs x 10

• Set 2: 80 lbs x 10

• Set 3: 90 lbs x 10

• Set 4: 100 lbs x 10

• Set 5: 105 lbs x 10 (Feeling smooth!)

What weight do you usually use for your warm-up/base volume sets?

... Read moreWhen it comes to bench press training, starting with a well-structured base volume is essential for building strength and honing technique. Performing multiple sets with moderate weights, such as 5 sets of 10 reps as shown, helps improve muscular endurance and familiarizes you with proper bar path and speed. This approach reduces injury risk by allowing your body to adapt progressively. For most lifters, selecting the right warm-up and base volume weights depends on individual strength levels and training goals. A good rule of thumb is to start approximately 50-60% of your one-rep max for the initial sets, gradually increasing the load in small increments while keeping movement crisp. This method not only primes your muscles but also reinforces ideal movement patterns. Incorporating volume work regularly during bench press sessions can lead to significant improvements in muscle hypertrophy and neuromuscular coordination. Additionally, focusing on technique during these sets—such as controlled descent, proper grip width, and stable shoulder positioning—ensures long-term progress and joint safety. Many workout enthusiasts also find it helpful to track their volume sets and weights to progressively overload over time. Remember, the goal of these base volume sets is not to max out but to build a solid foundation for heavier lifting days. Ultimately, experimenting with base volume weights that feel smooth and manageable, just like the gradual weight increase from 75 lbs to 105 lbs in this routine, allows you to develop consistency and confidence in your bench press performance.
