I Came for Chaka… But I Left With Something I Didn’t Expect.
I thought I was coming for the music.
To hear the songs that hold memories. To get dressed up, put on my heels, find my seat and enjoy a night with an artist whose voice has traveled through generations.
But somewhere between the lights, the music and watching a woman command a stage simply by being who she is, something shifted in me.
I left with a reminder:
You don’t have to become younger to remain vibrant.
You don’t have to become someone else to remain interesting.
And you certainly don’t have to disappear just because another chapter of life has begun.
There is something beautiful about a grown woman who has stopped asking permission to enjoy her life.
That night reminded me that I can still dress up.
Still feel sexy.
Still try something new.
Still walk into a room and enjoy being there.
Not because I’m trying to hold on to who I used to be—but because I’m finally learning to fully enjoy who I am now.
So what did I leave with?
Permission to keep living.
And moving forward, I’m going to stop saving certain experiences for “one day.” If I want to wear the dress, I’ll wear it. If I want to hear the music, I’ll go. If something brings joy into my life, I’m going to make room for it.
Because growing older was never supposed to mean growing invisible.
Maybe the next chapter isn’t asking us to slow down.
Maybe it’s asking us to finally show up.
