Recently, I’ve been thinking a lot about what it truly means to 'know oneself.' It’s such a profound journey, isn’t it? We often hear that to know oneself is to understand the intricate tapestry of human frailty, and I couldn't agree more. It's not just about celebrating our strengths, but also acknowledging our vulnerabilities, our imperfections, and those moments when we feel utterly lost or incomplete. These are the very threads that make up our unique stories, and frankly, they’re what make us human. For a long time, I viewed 'frailty' as something to overcome or hide. But what if it’s actually a compass? What if that feeling of incompleteness or that 'deep longing' we sometimes experience is actually guiding us towards something essential, something vital? This is where a particular Bible verse has been resonating deeply with me: Jeremiah 29:13. It says, 'THEN [WITH A DEEP LONGING] YOU WILL SEEK ME AND REQUIRE ME [AS A VITAL NECESSITY] AND (YOU WILL) FIND ME WHEN YOU SEARCH FOR ME WITH ALL YOUR HEART.' This verse isn't just about finding faith; it's about finding meaning in our human experience. When we acknowledge our frailty, that’s often when the 'deep longing' kicks in – a longing for purpose, for connection, for understanding. It's in these moments of vulnerability that we start to 'require' something more, something that feels like a 'vital necessity' for our souls. It’s an invitation to embark on a spiritual quest, to look beyond our immediate circumstances and search for a deeper truth. What does it mean to 'search for me with all your heart'? For me, it’s not always about grand gestures. It's in the quiet moments of reflection, in journaling my thoughts, in conversations with trusted friends, and yes, in prayer. It’s about being honest with myself about my struggles and my hopes. When I truly lean into this search, I find that understanding myself becomes clearer. My 'frailty' doesn't disappear, but it becomes less daunting because it's framed within a larger context of seeking and finding. This journey of self-discovery, fueled by a deep longing and guided by faith, helps me piece together that 'intricate tapestry' of who I am. It helps me understand why I react certain ways, what truly brings me joy, and what challenges I need to grow through. It’s a continuous process, of course. There are days I feel more connected, and days I feel adrift. But the promise of Jeremiah 29:13 — that when I seek, I will find — gives me immense comfort and motivation. It transforms vulnerability into a path towards strength and genuine self-knowledge. So, if you’re also navigating the complexities of knowing yourself and embracing your human frailty, perhaps that deep longing you feel is exactly what you need to start your own search.
