Elfs and Cat
As a cat parent, I constantly find myself asking: what are they thinking? And more often, the thought pops into my head, "All they do is watch you!" It’s a running joke in our household, and honestly, it’s so true. My sweet orange tabby cat seems to have a silent, omnipresent surveillance system, especially when I’m busy. Lately, this watchful behavior has taken a hilarious turn with our Elf on the Shelf. You know those mischievous little elves that pop up around the holidays? Well, my cat has become their most dedicated, albeit silent, observer. I recently set up a scene where the two Elf on the Shelf dolls were wrapped in tortillas, looking like tiny burritos under a glass cloche, with a note announcing "It's TACO TUESDAY!" I fully expected my human family to be amused, but the real critic was my feline friend. From a safe distance, perched on the back of the sofa, my orange tabby silently scrutinized the scene. No pounces, no batting, just intense, unwavering focus. It was as if my cat was trying to decipher their next move, or perhaps just judging my holiday creativity! It’s not just the Elf on the Shelf antics that capture my cat's attention. My hobbies also seem to be prime-time viewing. When I settle down with my bullet journal, carefully planning out my days and adding little doodles, there’s usually an orange tabby presence nearby. Sometimes, they're sleeping soundly on a white blanket beside me, but even then, I swear I can feel their gaze. Other times, they're wide awake, watching every stroke of my marker. It's like they're my personal, furry supervisor, ensuring I stay on task and perhaps offering silent critiques on my artistic choices. And don't even get me started on my crochet projects! I've been working on a lovely green crocheted item lately, and the sight of the yarn winding and the orange crochet hook clicking seems to be utterly mesmerizing to my cat. They'll lie on the white blanket, head sometimes turned away in feigned disinterest, but I know they're aware. Every now and then, a paw might tentatively reach out to bat at the yarn, or they'll just observe with those big, curious eyes. It's a constant reminder that I'm never truly alone, even in my most focused moments. This constant observation, this feeling that "all they do is watch you," isn't just about curiosity; I think it’s a big part of how cats bond with us. They're learning our routines, understanding our movements, and just being present in our lives. It’s a quiet form of companionship that I’ve come to cherish. So, next time you feel those feline eyes on you, whether you’re creating tiny burrito elves for Taco Tuesday, meticulously decorating your bullet journal, or crafting a new crocheted item, remember: your cat isn't just watching; they're connecting, observing, and silently adding their unique brand of magic to your everyday life.
