Their wax-based core means incredible blendability and rich, vibrant colors. My top tip for beginners is to always start with light layers. Don't press too hard right away! Build up your colors gradually. This allows you to create smooth transitions and achieve depth without oversaturating the paper. For blending, I often use a colorless blender pencil or even a lighter shade of the same color, applying gentle, circular motions. You can also layer complementary colors to create new hues or use a white pencil to lighten and soften areas. Experimenting with pressure is key too – a light touch for subtle shading, and a firmer hand for bold, dark lines or intense color saturation. When tackling a character like LITTLE MAC, it's not just about getting the colors right, but also capturing his iconic look and dynamic pose. I always start with a light sketch to map out the basic anatomy and proportions. Pay close attention to references if you're aiming for accuracy! For LITTLE MAC, his boxing gloves and determined expression are crucial. I try to convey movement and energy even in a static drawing. Once the sketch is solid, I begin applying color. For his skin, I layer various flesh tones, building up shadows and highlights. For the gloves, I think about where the light hits and creates shine, using brighter colors in those areas and deeper reds or browns for the shadowed parts.
