For me, it was a mix of sun exposure, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) from minor breakouts, and sometimes even just irritation from dryness. Many people also experience melasma around the mouth, which can be linked to hormonal changes. Understanding the cause is the first step to finding the right products to get rid of your dark spots and hyperpigmentation circles. My journey started with a deep dive into active ingredients. I learned that consistency is key, and not all products are created equal. Here are the types of ingredients and steps that truly transformed my skin: Vitamin C: This antioxidant powerhouse is brilliant for brightening and evening out skin tone. I started incorporating a stable Vitamin C serum into my morning routine. It helps to protect against environmental damage and fades existing spots over time. Alpha Arbutin/Niacinamide: These ingredients are fantastic for inhibiting melanin production, which is what causes dark spots. I rotated between an Alpha Arbutin serum and a Niacinamide serum in my evening routine. They are generally well-tolerated and work gently to reduce pigmentation.
