First Litter

When we decided to foster, we usually got kittens or adult cats, but this time it was different – we welcomed a whole new family: a mama cat and her tiny newborns! It was truly our first time fostering a stray with a full litter, and it came with a steep learning curve, especially around understanding a cat's gestation period. Before this, I honestly didn't know much about how long cats were pregnant. Turns out, the typical cat gestation period is about 63 to 65 days, which is roughly nine weeks. It's fascinating how quickly it all happens! For us, we brought in our mama cat when she was already quite pregnant, so we had to quickly learn the ropes to ensure she had the best care possible. One of the first things I learned was how to spot the signs of pregnancy. Early on, you might notice something called 'pinking up,' where the nipples become darker and more prominent, usually around three weeks in. Our mama cat definitely showed this, and it was a clear signal that kittens were on the way! Her appetite also increased significantly, and she started gaining weight. Towards the end, her belly grew noticeably, and you could even feel the kittens moving if you were gentle enough. It was such a special feeling, knowing new lives were developing inside her. Caring for a pregnant mama cat requires special attention. We made sure she had a high-quality diet, often recommending kitten food as it's packed with extra calories and nutrients vital for developing kittens. Regular vet check-ups were crucial to monitor her health and the kittens' progress. Our vet guided us through what to expect, from potential complications to preparing for labor. As her due date approached, she started 'nesting.' This meant she'd look for quiet, secluded spots to prepare for birth. We set up a cozy nesting box in a quiet room, lined with soft blankets, allowing her privacy and comfort. It's so important for a pregnant cat to feel safe and secure during this time. Watching her go through the final stages of pregnancy and eventually give birth to her beautiful kittens was an experience I'll never forget. Each tiny meow and stretch was a reminder of the incredible journey she'd been on. Understanding the cat gestation period not only helped us provide better care but also deepened our appreciation for the resilience and love of a mama cat.
