April 2nd World autism awareness day 💙

In September 2021, I sat in the doctor’s office and heard what I had suspected about our then two year old son. After three or four months of testing, meeting with the doctor, and answering questions about him, our son was diagnosed with Autism. I remember keeping it to myself for a while and crying daily because I was afraid. Afraid of his future, the unknown, everything we were going to have to go through.

Autism has been a journey I never planned and for sure does not come with a manual but it does come with a parent who will never give up. I will never give up speaking up for my so , being his voice. I will never give up advocating for him, making sure he has the best system in school, therapy or anywhere we go.

It has been a journey filled with so many emotions. Days I’m in the verge of wanting to cry, days I have mental breakdowns, days that I am drained and overwhelmed and days that I feel SO MUCH mom guilt. What beats all this is seeing the progress my son has had. Seeing him communicate and show emotions. Being able to see him play with peers and his sister. 🥺 watching him tell me “mommy I love you” randomly. Those moments beat everything.

I have prayed for days where my son would talk. Prayed for when he would finally leave the pecs board and use words. Prayed for him to express how he felt. My God is so great! He shows up and comforts me when I feel discouraged and guilty for feeling like I’m not doing my best as his mom.

Not only should we be aware of autism but also accept it and grow our knowledge about it.

Autism affects individuals differently, presenting a spectrum of challenges and abilities, leading to a need for understanding from society. Early diagnosis is crucial for effective intervention, and it can provide families with tailored support. Parent advocacy is vital in navigating systems, be it educational or therapeutic, ensuring that children with autism receive the necessary resources to flourish. Positive behavioral support, social skills training, and inclusive educational practices play a significant role in a child's development. The community is increasingly becoming aware of the importance of acceptance and understanding, which can lead to a more supportive environment for individuals with autism. Celebrating milestones, no matter how small, is essential for families—connections through shared experiences can empower parents and their children alike. Engaging in local or online autism support groups can offer insights and coping strategies, creating a network for emotional support and shared knowledge. As we mark this day, let us collectively strive towards greater acceptance and understanding of autism, where every individual is appreciated for their unique contributions.
