5 things you’re doing WRONG with low porosity hair

Most low porosity girlies are not struggling with products…

they’re struggling with technique. Once you fix these little habits, your hair gets softer, stays moisturized longer, and stops feeling dry a few hours after wash day.

Here’s what to remember:

• Shampoo twice to remove hidden buildup

• Squeeze water out before applying deep conditioner

• Warm opens your cuticle, cool closes it

• Leaving conditioner on for an hour does nothing for low porosity

• Apply your leave-in while your hair is still warm and damp

Low porosity hair is not “difficult,” it just needs the right order and the right steps.

Follow for weekly low porosity routines, ingredients, and mistakes to avoid so your hair can finally stay hydrated.

... Read moreTaking care of low porosity hair can often feel tricky because this hair type naturally resists moisture due to tightly bound cuticles. However, understanding your hair’s unique needs can transform your routine and help you achieve the soft, hydrated hair you want. First, shampooing twice is essential to remove hidden buildup that prevents moisture from penetrating the hair shaft. The initial wash cleanses the scalp, but it’s the second shampoo that truly breaks down residue, allowing conditioners and treatments to work effectively. Next, when applying deep conditioner, avoid doing so on soaking wet hair. Excess water dilutes the product and prevents absorption. Instead, gently squeeze out excess water so the conditioner can penetrate your hair cuticles properly. Water temperature plays a crucial role too. Using warm water opens your cuticles, enhancing nutrient absorption, while cooler water helps to seal the cuticles, locking in moisture and reducing frizz. Avoid hot water as it can dry your hair out and cause damage. Another common misconception is that leaving conditioner on for over an hour deeply hydrates low porosity hair. In reality, after 20-30 minutes, the hair stops absorbing moisture, and keeping conditioner on too long can lead to buildup and mushy strands. Lastly, timing for leave-in conditioner application is key. Low porosity hair tends to lose water quickly, so applying leave-in products while your hair is still warm and damp helps to lock in moisture more efficiently. By adjusting these techniques, low porosity hair becomes easier to manage and retains moisture longer, making your wash days less frustrating. Consistency with these tips, combined with choosing lightweight, hydrating products specifically designed for low porosity hair, can dramatically improve hair health and appearance. Remember, low porosity hair isn’t difficult— it just requires the right care routine and attention to detail to thrive.

With the two shampoo washes, always make sure you’re reading the directions on your hair products. I never realized my shampoo says to wash with shampoo twice 😭🤦🏽‍♀️ yes, reading is fundamental, but I definitely can tell the difference when washing my hair now.
