Hey low porosity hair beauties! I totally get the struggle. It can feel like products just sit on top, leaving your hair greasy and weighed down instead of nourished. I've been there, and through trial and error, I've learned some game-changing tips that go hand-in-hand with our DIY oil blend. First off, let's clear up a common misconception, like the sign in my bathroom says: oil is not moisture. It's a sealant. For our low porosity strands, hydration is key before sealing. Always apply your oils to damp, hydrated hair. This helps lock in the water, which is what truly moisturizes your hair, preventing that sticky, coated feeling. Now, let's talk about oils. You might be wondering about certain popular ones. For instance, coconut oil comes up a lot. While it's amazing for some hair types, for us low porosity girlies, it can often be a culprit for buildup and stiffness. Its molecular structure makes it harder for our hair cuticle to absorb, and it can even contribute to protein overload for some. So, if your hair feels brittle or heavy after using coconut oil, trust your gut – it might not be the best fit for your strands. I personally prefer to avoid it for my low porosity routine. Instead, we lean into those lighter oils that truly penetrate. The Grapeseed, Jojoba, Argan, and Sweet Almond oils in our recipe are fantastic because their smaller molecular size allows them to actually get past our tightly closed cuticles. Grapeseed is super light, Jojoba mimics our scalp's natural sebum, Argan is rich in vitamins, and Sweet Almond adds a lovely shine without the weight. These are truly some of the best light oils for low porosity hair that actually help instead of sitting on top. I've also been experimenting with rosemary oil for hair growth, and it's been incredible! If you're looking to boost length retention and scalp health, you can easily add a few drops of rosemary essential oil to your carrier oil blend (like the one we just made). Just be sure to dilute it properly if you're using an essential oil. Another option is making your own rosemary-infused oil by steeping dried rosemary in a carrier oil for a few weeks – it's a natural way to stimulate follicles. And remember how our DIY blend can be used as a pre-poo treatment? This is seriously a game-changer for me. Before shampooing, I apply a generous amount of the oil blend to my scalp and ends, gently massaging it in. I leave it on for about 15-30 minutes, or even overnight, before washing. This pre-treatment helps protect my hair from the stripping effects of shampoo, reduces friction during washing, and keeps my strands feeling soft and manageable. It’s perfect for preventing hygral fatigue and really boosts shine. Beyond oils, here are a few other hair growth tips for low porosity hair I swear by: Scalp Massage: Regular, gentle scalp massages with or without oil can increase blood circulation, promoting growth. Gentle Handling: Our hair is prone to breakage if not handled carefully. Use seamless hair ties, satin pillowcases, and wide-tooth combs. Heat Protection: Always use a heat protectant when styling with heat. Clarify Regularly: Low porosity hair can easily get buildup, so a gentle clarifying shampoo every few weeks can make a huge difference. Embracing these practices along with your lightweight oil blend will truly transform your low porosity hair journey! It's all about finding what works for your unique strands.
