Low porosity hair struggles are rarely about products.

They come from missing the foundation.

If your low porosity hair stays dry, brittle, or coated no matter what you use, it's usually because the basics aren't in place yet. Low porosity hair has a tightly closed cuticle, which means moisture and treatments need the right conditions to actually penetrate.

Mistake 1 is not fully understanding how low porosity hair behaves and skipping a consistent wash routine.

Without proper cleansing, buildup blocks moisture before it even has a chance.

Mistake 2 is relying on products to fix the problem or avoiding trims to "save length." Length retention depends on healthy ends, not just growth.

Mistake 3 is using oils as moisture. Oils do not hydrate low porosity hair. Heavy oils can sit on the surface, leading to buildup and dryness when hydration is missing.

The biggest game changer for low porosity hair is deep conditioning with heat. Conditioning without heat often isn't enough to open the cuticle, which is why hair stays stiff, dry, or snaps easily.

If you're struggling right now, the solution isn't more oils or more products. It's going back to the basics and building a proper foundation.

I created a free low porosity hair guide that breaks down the basics. Grab that first, then build from there.

Save this for your next wash day, share with someone new to low porosity care, and follow for beginner-friendly low porosity hair education. Also, grab my free guide. 💗

... Read moreFrom my own experience caring for low porosity hair, I can attest that understanding its unique needs is crucial before experimenting with many products. Because the hair cuticle is tightly closed, moisture struggles are common, and the typical approach of slathering on oils or heavy conditioners often worsens buildup and dryness. One game-changing method I've found is incorporating deep conditioning treatments with heat. Whether using a hooded dryer, heat cap, or even a warm towel wrap, applying heat allows the cuticle to gently open and absorb moisture more effectively. It’s subtle but makes a big difference in softness and elasticity. Another key is maintaining a consistent wash routine. Resist the urge to extend time between washes too long, as buildup from oils, dirt, and product can block hydration. I stick to cleansing every 7 to 10 days depending on my lifestyle to keep my scalp healthy and hair responsive. Also, trims are essential—not just for aesthetics but for long-term length retention. Low porosity hair can be prone to breakage if split ends are left untreated. Regular trimming every 8 to 12 weeks protects hair integrity rather than impeding growth. Finally, be cautious about oils. While they can seal moisture, they do not hydrate. I use lightweight oils sparingly after moisturizing my hair with water-based products. If you’re struggling with low porosity hair, returning to these basics and building a proper foundation will yield better results than piling on more products. Combining product knowledge with these foundational habits improves moisture retention, elasticity, and overall hair health, creating a manageable and beautiful hair care journey.
