Seeing my latest Gyaru girl drawing really makes me reflect on why I love this subculture so much! It's more than just a style; it's a whole attitude and a vibrant way of life that celebrates individuality. When I was sketching this particular girl, with her striking blonde hair and fierce leopard print attire, I was trying to capture that unmistakable Gyaru spirit. For those new to it, 'what is a Gyaru girl?' is a common question. Essentially, Gyaru is a Japanese fashion subculture that originated in the 1990s, characterized by bold fashion choices, tanned skin, bleached hair, and heavy makeup. It's a statement against traditional Japanese beauty standards, embracing a more rebellious and glamorous look. My drawing, with her riding a black and pink scooter adorned with Hello Kitty details, zipping through a city night background, really embodies that playful, independent spirit. The pink flip phone in her hand, with its sassy 'No, I'm not busy' speech bubble, just seals the deal on that confident Gyaru personality. Gyaru fashion characteristics in the 2020s have evolved, but core elements remain. You'll still see plenty of blonde hair, dramatic eye makeup, and fashion pieces that stand out. Leopard print, as seen in my drawing, is a classic Gyaru staple! There are also so many diverse sub-styles. For example, Shiro Gyaru characteristics involve a focus on lighter makeup and often a more doll-like appearance, contrasting with the darker tans of other styles. Then there's beach Gyaru, perfect for summer, often featuring bright bikinis and sun-kissed looks, embracing a carefree, fun vibe. It’s all about expressing yourself through fashion. The Gyaru attitude is definitely one of my favorite aspects. It's about being strong, confident, and not caring what others think. Their hobbies might include fashion blogging, makeup tutorials, or even exploring new cafes and vibrant city spots. The Gyaru art style is something I find incredibly inspiring too. Whether it’s fan art, concept sketches, or even Gyaru posters you see online, they all capture that distinct aesthetic and energy.
