Growing up in a multicultural city like New York City, I’ve personally experienced how diversity, inclusion, and equity (DEI) shape vibrant communities. Walking through the neighborhoods, you hear greetings from around the world — the welcoming messages captured in multiple languages like 'SELAMAT DATANG', 'BIENVENUE', and '환영하다' perfectly illustrate a global sense of belonging. This everyday multicultural vibe fosters not only curiosity but respect for different backgrounds and traditions. Incorporating DEI into our daily lives isn’t just about acknowledging differences; it’s about actively respecting and valuing each culture’s unique contributions. For example, in NYC, cultural festivals, food fairs, and community events provide opportunities to learn about and celebrate diversity firsthand. Engaging in such experiences teaches empathy and helps break down stereotypes, making the city—and any community—a more welcoming space. Beyond big cities, promoting DEI involves small acts too. Simple gestures like learning a few greetings in another language, appreciating diverse art forms, or challenging our own biases contribute to deeper inclusion.
