Redo ↪️ The 🇺🇸 constitution

I found this #book in the #subway to re #learn about #AmericanHistory ! To be reminded this #country was built off of slavery, genocide, oppression and white supremacy. It continues to be dominated by white cishet men. The constitution never 👎 saw all men as equal 🟰 definitely didn’t have women, LGBTQ 🏳️‍🌈 & trans ⚧️ folks in mind. We need a preamble / government that includes, uplifts and protects all of its citizens authentic selves.

... Read moreReading about the U.S. Constitution in public spaces like a subway offers a unique chance to reflect on its implications for everyday people. Historically, the Constitution was crafted in a context deeply influenced by slavery, colonialism, and systemic oppression. Many of its framers explicitly excluded women, Indigenous peoples, Black Americans, and LGBTQ+ communities from the protections supposedly guaranteed by the document. From personal observations and conversations, it’s clear that these exclusions have had lasting effects. Women and LGBTQ+ individuals often face systemic barriers to full political and social participation that the original Constitution did not foresee or accommodate. For example, the document’s language and subsequent laws often reflected the norms of white cisgender heterosexual men, leaving many identities marginalized or invisible legally. In recent years, there has been growing advocacy to revise or expand the Constitution’s preamble and amendments explicitly to recognize and protect diverse identities and authentic selves. This includes pushing for legal recognition of gender identities, protection of voting rights for all citizens regardless of race or gender, and acknowledgment of historical injustices like genocide and slavery. Engaging communities in conversations about how constitutional principles can evolve helps foster a government structure that truly represents everyone. This process also requires acknowledging uncomfortable truths about the nation’s founding and ongoing inequalities. Ultimately, striving for a Constitution that is inclusive and just means reimagining it as a living document—one that grows with its people and their diverse experiences rather than a fixed set of principles that exclude large portions of society. This perspective can inspire meaningful civic engagement and more equitable policymaking in the future.
