Living through the intense political and social turmoil in Jerusalem and the broader Israeli-Palestinian context profoundly impacts not only personal identity but also community relationships. Many individuals like me, who come from diverse backgrounds—including Yemeni heritage—find themselves caught between overlapping narratives of oppression and resilience. The historical and religious significance of Jerusalem does not always translate to personal safety or spiritual fulfillment, especially when extremist forces dominate the landscape. The trauma from ongoing violence often manifests in profound psychological distress, which unfortunately sometimes leads to harmful practices disguised as 'therapy.' Personal stories of forced conversions and loveless marriages highlight systemic issues within communities on all sides. These experiences underscore how political ideologies such as Zionism, particularly its Ashkenazi supremacist aspects, contribute to exclusion and suffering rather than peace or unity. In contrast, cities like New York offer spaces where diversity and inclusion are more than slogans—they are lived realities. Investing in social growth and embracing intersectionality provide a glimmer of hope for coexistence and healing, values desperately needed in areas rife with sustained conflict. Importantly, hope lies beyond territorial disputes and protracted battles that have plagued the region for millennia. Ultimately, a future of peace, stability, and mutual respect requires acknowledging painful truths and rejecting simplistic narratives. It is about recognizing the humanity behind every hashtag—#ExJew, #Passover, #Jerusalem, and #Palestinians—and working toward a world where love and understanding replace fanaticism and division.
