As someone who isn’t a typical sports fanatic glued to every game, I've always appreciated the unique culture surrounding New York sports teams like the Knicks, Jets, Mets, and Yankees. Growing up in New York, supporting these teams felt less about constant viewing and more about community and shared pride. An unforgettable part of my childhood was attending baseball practices, which gave me a personal connection to the sport, even if I never became a big game watcher. What I find most enjoyable is the social aspect of sports—gathering with friends for house parties filled with snacks and great company creates an atmosphere that goes far beyond the stadium experience. I prefer this kind of relaxed, fun environment over the hassles of crowded venues and less-than-ideal facilities, like dirty bathrooms. Being a New Yorker, sports are intertwined with a strong sense of American pride and local identity. Cheering “ICKSM LET'S GO” for the Knicks or rooting for the Mets and Yankees in baseball resonates on a cultural level. Even if I don’t watch every game live, staying connected through highlights, stories, and fan discussions keeps me engaged. It’s this balance of personal memories, social enjoyment, and team spirit that shapes my unique approach to being a sports fan in New York.
