Having spent a lot of time cycling around NYC, I've noticed that while bike lanes help, they don't fully address the real dangers cyclists face. The Vision Zero plan's focus on bike lanes is a start, but reducing the overwhelming number of cars and aggressive speeding is equally important to create a safer biking environment. In my experience, areas with heavy car traffic feel claustrophobic and dangerous for cyclists, especially when speeding is common. This not only increases the risk of accidents but also contributes to air pollution—something Vision Zero aims to improve by lowering emissions. To bike safely in such a busy urban setting, it's vital to combine physical infrastructure improvements like protected bike lanes with policies targeting reduced vehicle speeds and traffic volume through congestion charges or better public transport incentives. Community awareness campaigns also help educate both drivers and cyclists about sharing the roads carefully. Ultimately, Vision Zero's success hinges on multi-faceted approaches addressing traffic flow, urban design, and environmental impact. Advocating for such holistic change while practicing attentive, defensive riding has been my way to stay safe and enjoy cycling around NYC.
