A tongue tie clip isn’t a quick fix all
Breaks my heart every time.
Here is what we know:
📣babies with tension can have feeding difficulties
📣babies with a high and or narrow palate tell us that -
1) the tongue most likely isn’t resting in the palate (it should)
2) they are at higher risk for sleep and breathing issues
3) they run the risk of having narrow jaws and crooked teeth
📣a tongue tie procedure ALONE is not A FIX ALL SOLUTION and I’m damn sure this is not a TEAM approach
If there are risk factors that I’ve mentioned above the best guidance families should receive is working with a team.
👥👶🏽working at the bottom of the intervention hierarchy-
🪜starting with the least invasive and working through needs
🪜starting with basic education for families that they aren’t getting through lactation and pediatricians about restrictive oral tissues, oral health, sleep and breathing
🪜work on tension and organize the body on movement patterns and oral reflexes
🪜lactation support with a professional who has thorough training in oral motor function, airway and tethered oral tissues and is open to working with a team
🪜and if a restrictive oral tie is truly present after running through other barriers I have mentioned .. your team will refer and support you and your family with this. This is when a release is truly a benefit .

A tongue tie can lead to various challenges for infants, notably impacting feeding, sleep, and future dental health. Babies exhibiting signs like open mouth posture and nursing difficulties may require not just procedural interventions but also a thorough evaluation of their oral and bodily mechanics. Issues such as tension in breastfeeding can complicate their growth and overall wellness. It’s critical for parents to seek guidance from a multidisciplinary team, including lactation specialists and pediatricians, who understand the relationship between oral ties, airway function, and feeding attributes. Educational workshops can empower parents, providing vital information about feeding dynamics, the significance of early oral health, and how to navigate support systems effectively. These sessions are not merely about addressing tongue ties but about understanding and nurturing a child’s complete oral health journey. They help parents recognize the signs of restrictive oral tissues and their implications for sleep and breathing. Overall, recognizing the limitations of quick fixes, like a tongue tie clip, encourages a holistic approach aimed at ensuring healthy feeding practices and long-term well-being for infants.
