What I Look For

If I’m doing a natural light photo session, I always consider three things.

1. Time of day.

- I always look for a way to soften the light using trees or buildings for their shade. Unless it’s golden hour, we love a good golden hour. 👏🏻

2. Location.

- Not only just the location, but how to best utilize the location. For example, this photo I got further up on a bank and shot down towards the pond, so I could fill in the background with the water.

3. Uniqueness.

- Especially if it’s an iconic area for photos in your area, there’s going to be good shot inspo. However, I try to think outside the box. This photo was taken at a local museum, where everybody uses the museum or the bridge over the pond as a background. They’re always beautiful photos, but I wanted something a little more magical for this sweet couple. 🤞🏻

Understanding the time of day is crucial; the golden hour, shortly after sunrise or before sunset, offers the softest, most flattering light. Utilizing shade from trees or buildings can also help diffuse harsh sunlight and create a more even exposure. Location choice plays a significant role too. Selecting unique spots to photograph can add a distinctive touch, whether it’s an iconic landmark or a lesser-known hidden gem. Experimenting with different angles can help you utilize the environment effectively. For instance, shooting from a higher vantage point can provide a more dynamic composition, showcasing the beauty of your surroundings. Lastly, embracing uniqueness is key. Instead of opting for traditional backgrounds, think creatively and explore less conventional settings. This approach not only sets your work apart but can also add a sense of narrative to your images. Remember to keep an eye out for interesting textures and colors that can enhance your composition. With these insights, you’ll be able to elevate your photography and capture unforgettable moments in natural light, making your portfolio stand out.
