3 ways I make summer special with a vacation

Not going on vacation this summer? Same here. But I’ve learned that a meaningful summer doesn’t require plane tickets, beach resorts, or a week off from work. Here are 3 ways I make summer feel special and magical for my family—without ever leaving town:

1. We create a summer rhythm, not a schedule.

Instead of trying to fill every day with an activity, I build a rhythm we can count on: morning walks, messy crafts on the porch, library days, afternoon popsicles, and late bedtime bike rides. The kids know what to expect, and we all stay grounded. No rushing, no pressure—just flow.

2. We do “yes” days—mini edition.

We pick one day a week where I say “yes” more than usual. Yes to ice cream for breakfast. Yes to getting muddy in the backyard. Yes to pulling out all the blankets and making a fort. These little yeses add up to BIG memories for them. It’s low-cost and high-impact.

3. We find magic in the mundane.

Water play in the driveway, flashlight tag after dark, movie nights on a blanket in the living room. I hype up the little things. If we treat ordinary moments like they’re exciting, the kids feel that energy. Honestly? I do too.

I used to feel guilty about not taking big vacations—but I’ve realized that what kids really remember isn’t the trip, it’s the feeling. The joy. The connection. The fun they got to have with you.

This summer, I’m not chasing an itinerary—I’m creating a vibe.

And it’s working. 💛

... Read moreSummer is often associated with vacations and travel, but there are plenty of ways to create special moments right at home. Involving the whole family in daily activities can elevate the summer experience without breaking the bank. To make summer memorable, consider starting a unique tradition such as a weekly family night. This can be a night dedicated to cooking together, playing board games, or watching a favorite movie. By establishing a dedicated family night, everyone can look forward to a special time spent with each other. Engaging in outdoor activities is another way to create lasting memories. Organizing a backyard camping night—complete with tents, s'mores, and stargazing—can bring excitement and fun right to your home. Alternatively, set up a scavenger hunt in your local park to explore nature while having fun together. Additionally, tap into local resources and community events. Many towns host summer activities such as outdoor movie nights, farmers’ markets, and free concerts. Discovering these opportunities can enhance your family's summer experience while fostering a sense of community and connection. Lastly, keep in mind that summer is a great time to cultivate new hobbies or revisit old ones. Whether it's gardening, painting, or cooking new recipes, these activities can enrich your family's quality time and foster creativity. Ultimately, the key to making the summer unforgettable lies not in extravagant vacations, but in the shared experiences and connections formed with loved ones. Celebrate the smaller moments and cherish the bonds that are created during these unforgettable weeks.
