... Read moreGrowing up in a household where your parents never showed up to school events because they had to work can leave a profound emotional impact. I experienced this firsthand—as a child, watching other parents cheer from the sidelines, while mine were absent due to their responsibilities. It wasn’t easy, but I understood their hard work was for our better future. Now, as a parent myself, I’ve made a committed choice to show up for every event I can. Whether it’s a soccer game, a school play, or a simple classroom celebration, being there means more than just physical presence. It’s about showing love, support, and valuing their efforts and interests. These moments create memories for my kids that build their confidence and sense of belonging. Showing up also means communicating to our children that they come first, that their passions and achievements matter to us. It’s a way of breaking patterns that may have existed in our own childhoods and offering them a different experience filled with support and acknowledgment. However, I’m mindful that not everyone has the luxury to attend every event, due to work or other constraints. What’s important is making the most of the moments you can be present, and consistently showing your children they are loved and valued in countless other ways when you can’t be there physically. In the end, showing up isn’t just about being present at events—it’s about being present in their lives, listening to their stories, celebrating their successes, and offering a reliable source of love and encouragement. These actions truly shape their emotional health and help them grow into confident, happy individuals.
