The Spider Off

The Spider-Off

The Great Weaver sat at the center of her realm, all eight legs touching different threads, and took stock of what she’d accomplished.

Three mystery traditions established. Three cultures prepared to nurture souls toward the choice of eternal service. Moon’s teachings taking root in Banpo, Sun’s blessings spreading along the Nile, Darkness’s transformation mysteries seeding in Vinča.

She reached out to the Web with gentle intention.

“Show me,” she whispered. “Have things changed? Are we on the right path?”

The Web responded immediately, threads glowing with approval.

Information flowed into her awareness: The priestesses were working. Teaching others. The mystery traditions were spreading organically, passed from woman to woman, generation preparing the next generation. And the souls themselves, the Web was processing them with unprecedented efficiency.

The Weaver examined the flow with surprise and satisfaction. Inanna’s infrastructure improvement from months ago had integrated completely. The priestesses Inanna had left to help manage the processing were still working, organized and efficient. Souls were being wrapped, sorted, guided through their transitions with minimal divine intervention required.

It was... automated. Not completely, but enough that the Weaver’s constant presence wasn’t necessary anymore. The Web was managing itself, calling on her only when truly needed, freeing her for other work.

Other work like establishing mystery traditions. Like building the foundation for guardians who would eventually serve the pattern.

The Web pulsed with satisfaction, confirming: You’re doing the right steps. Building the structure. The rest will come in time.

The Weaver felt relief settle into her core. Good. This was working. The overwhelming burden that had crushed her for eons was finally easing.

The Web pulsed again, and a new thread began to glow.

Not one of her established connections. Not Ereshkigal or Nephthys or Hel or Inanna. Something else. Someone else.

The Weaver focused on the glowing thread with curiosity.

It led... To regions she hadn’t visited in this current cycle of work. To cultures she’d observed but not yet engaged with directly.

The thread pulsed more insistently.

What? What am I supposed to see?

The Web showed her an image: A spider. Not her. Someone else. A trickster god, clever and charismatic, weaving stories and webs with equal skill.

Anansi.

The Weaver stared at the vision, confused. The Web had shown her this deity before, during her journey through time when she’d been observing other death workers and potential recruits. She’d noted him with professional interest, another spider, a storyteller, someone who understood webs as both literal and metaphorical.

But why was the Web showing her this now?

The thread pulsed again, almost... encouragingly?

The Weaver tilted her head, all eight eyes focusing on the glowing path.

Are you... suggesting I visit him?

The Web pulsed with what felt distinctly like “yes, obviously.”

Why?

The Web didn’t answer directly, just continued glowing invitingly, like a friend trying very hard to facilitate a meeting.

The Weaver considered this. She’d been growing emotionally. Opening herself to connection after eons of isolation. She had sisters now, goddesses who understood her work, who collaborated and supported and even teased her affectionately.

Maybe... maybe meeting another spider would be interesting? Someone who understood spider things? The particular experience of spinning from your own substance, of seeing the world through eight eyes, of building traps that were also art?

Her Beloved was irreplaceable. That would never change. The grief she carried was permanent, woven into her very essence.

But perhaps a friend who understood the spider aspects of existence would be... nice?

The Weaver touched the glowing thread with one leg and felt it hum with approval.

Alright. I’ll visit. Just to see.

She let the thread pull her toward West Africa, toward Anansi’s territory, toward whatever the Web thought was worth her attention.

The Weaver manifested in a forest clearing, warm air thick with moisture and the scent of growing things. West Africa, lush and vibrant, humming with life.

And in the center of the clearing, surrounded by an impressive web strung between trees, sat Anansi.

He was in his spider form currently, sleek and clever-looking, smaller than her cosmic vastness but undeniably charismatic even as an arachnid. His web was beautiful, geometric patterns interspersed with irregular artistic flourishes, clearly designed to be both functional and impressive.

He noticed her immediately and shifted to a more humanoid form, still distinctly spider-like, configured in a way that suggested “person” more than “creature.”

“Well, well,” he said, his voice carrying warmth and mischief in equal measure. “The Great Weaver herself. I’ve heard stories about you. Cosmic spider goddess, eater of beloveds, wrapper of souls. Very impressive reputation.”

The Weaver settled into a semi-humanoid configuration as well, curious about this encounter.

“Anansi,” she acknowledged. “Trickster god. Storyteller. I’ve observed your work from a distance. You’re very skilled.”

“Observed, have you?” Anansi moved closer with fluid grace. “And now you’ve come in person. I’m honored. What brings the great cosmic Weaver to my humble territory?”

The Weaver wasn’t entirely sure how to answer that. The Web suggested it? I thought maybe another spider would understand spider things? I’m working on being less isolated?

“Curiosity,” she said instead. “Professional interest. You work with webs and stories. I work with webs and souls. Similar crafts.”

“Similar,” Anansi agreed, circling her with obvious interest. “Though I suspect your webs are considerably more... permanent than mine. Mine catch stories and occasionally foolish humans. Yours catches all of existence.”

“Different scales,” the Weaver said. “But the principles are the same. Thread and pattern. Structure and improvisation. Art and function woven together.”

Anansi’s multiple eyes gleamed with something that might have been appreciation or might have been calculation.

“You know,” he said, voice dropping into a more playful register, “I don’t often meet another spider who truly understands the craft. Most gods work with fire or water or earth. Big, obvious elements. But we work with thread. With patterns so delicate they’re almost invisible until you step back and see the whole structure.”

“Exactly,” the Weaver said, warming to the topic. “The Web is barely visible to most beings. They see individual threads, individual moments, but not the pattern connecting everything.”

“Whereas we,” Anansi gestured between them, “we see the pattern first. The connections. The way one thread pulls on another three levels away.”

The Weaver nodded, feeling genuine connection. This was nice. Talking shop with someone who understood the specific challenges of web-architecture.

Anansi’s expression shifted into something wickedly playful.

“Tell you what,” he said. “Since we’re both here, both spiders, both clearly very skilled... how about a friendly competition? A spider-off, if you will.”

The Weaver tilted her head. “A spider-off?”

“We each spin a web. Best structure wins.” His grin was pure trickster charm. “Just for fun. Professional curiosity. Seeing how the cosmic goddess compares to a humble trickster.”

The Weaver considered this. It sounded... fun? She hadn’t competed in anything for eons. Hadn’t played. Everything had been so serious, so heavy, so focused on survival and processing souls and managing overwhelming workload.

“Alright,” she agreed. “A friendly competition.”

Anansi’s grin widened. “Excellent. There are two large tree formations on opposite ends of this clearing. We each take one. Best web wins.”

They moved to their respective positions. The Weaver settled at her tree cluster, all eight legs already planning the architecture, calculating anchor points and tension ratios and the most efficient pattern for the space available.

“On my signal,” Anansi called. “Three... two... one... spin!”

The Weaver began.

And immediately lost herself in the work.

This was pure joy. No pressure, no cosmic stakes, just the pleasure of spinning thread from her own substance and creating pattern in space. She moved with practiced efficiency, each leg knowing exactly what to do, spinnerets producing silk in precise quantities.

Her web grew quickly, a perfect geometric pattern expanding outward from the center, each spiral precisely spaced, each radial thread at optimal tension. Beautiful and functional and utterly precise.

Across the clearing, Anansi had started his own web with confident showmanship, clearly planning something impressive and probably unnecessarily complex.

But then he made the mistake of glancing over to see how she was doing.

And stopped moving entirely.

She was mesmerizing to watch. Eight legs working in perfect coordination, moving so fast they blurred, creating pattern with such fluid grace it looked like dancing. Thread flowing from her spinnerets in silver streams, catching sunlight, transforming empty space into delicate architecture.

Anansi stood frozen, watching her work, completely forgetting about his own web.

She was beautiful.

Not in the conventional way gods were beautiful, all radiance and perfect features and symmetrical aesthetics.

But in the way that perfect function was beautiful. The way a master craftsperson made difficult work look effortless. The way she moved with absolute confidence, creating something extraordinary with casual ease.

He was so busy watching her that he didn’t notice his own thread tangling around his legs.

Didn’t notice the web he’d been building starting to collapse.

Didn’t notice until he tried to take a step and found himself thoroughly, embarrassingly stuck.

“Oh,” he said aloud. “Oh no.”

The Weaver, hearing his voice, looked up from her completed masterpiece.

Her web was perfect. Geometric precision married to artistic beauty, every thread at ideal tension, the whole structure humming with rightness.

Anansi’s web was a disaster. Half-finished, badly tangled, and currently wrapping around its creator with increasing enthusiasm.

The Weaver moved closer, examining the situation with her eight eyes.

Anansi hung suspended in his own web, legs wrapped in his own thread, looking deeply embarrassed.

“This is a built-in feature,” he said quickly, trying to salvage some dignity. “Adds character. Creates narrative tension. Makes the story more interesting. I win on technical innovation.”

The Weaver smiled.

It was a small smile, gentle and genuinely amused, and it made Anansi’s multiple hearts beat faster despite his current predicament.

“You’re trying to trick me into thinking you meant to do this,” she observed.

“Is it working?”

“No.”

Anansi sighed and let his head hang in defeat. “Alright, fine. I got distracted. I was watching you work and I forgot to pay attention to my own weaving.”

“Distracted by what?”

“By you,” Anansi said, and his voice shifted into something more genuine, less performative. “I was mesmerized by your beauty. The way you move, the way you create, the absolute mastery you have over your craft. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

His tone carried real admiration underneath the charming delivery. Smooth and sincere simultaneously. Bad boy energy wrapped around honest appreciation.

The Weaver blinked all eight eyes.

Oh.

Oh.

He was flirting.

That’s what this whole encounter had been. The Web hadn’t suggested a professional colleague or a potential friend in the purely platonic sense.

The Web had tried to set her up.

And Anansi had been interested from the start. The competition, the showmanship, the watching her work, all of it had been flirting.

For a moment, the Weaver just stared at him, processing this revelation.

And then she felt something unfamiliar stir in her chest. Not romantic interest, her Beloved held that space permanently, unchanging, irreplaceable.

But... amusement. Playfulness. The sudden desire to mess with the trickster who’d been trying to impress her.

He was a trickster. He could take it.

The Weaver moved closer to where Anansi hung suspended, tilted her head with false innocence, and smiled sweetly.

“How lovely,” she said in her gentlest voice. “I appreciate the compliment. Though I should mention—just for context—I ate my last mate. So perhaps you’d like to reconsider the mesmerization?”

Anansi’s expression went through several rapid changes: confusion, realization, alarm, and finally something like panicked respect.

“Oh,” he said. “Oh. Wow. Okay. We are going there. Cool. Cool cool cool. That’s... good to know. Very relevant information. Appreciate the transparency.”

His voice stayed smooth but his eyes showed barely contained terror.

The Weaver’s smile widened slightly. “Would you like help getting unstuck? I’m very good at untangling threads. It would be no trouble.”

The offer was genuine. And also absolutely terrifying given what she’d just revealed.

Anansi made a split-second calculation involving pride, self-preservation, and the very real possibility that accepting help from a mate-eating spider goddess might be misinterpreted as romantic interest.

“No! No, I’ve got this,” he said quickly. “Totally under control. This is... this is actually part of my process. Very intentional. I’ll be out in no time.”

“Are you certain?”

“Absolutely certain. You have big business to attend to anyway, don’t you? Cosmic web maintenance? Soul wrapping? Very important goddess duties?”

The Weaver tilted her head, still amused. “I do have responsibilities to return to.”

“Then you should definitely go handle those. Don’t worry about me. I’ll visit soon! We can continue this... friendship. Professional colleague friendship. Platonic spider appreciation friendship.”

He was babbling slightly.

The Weaver nodded graciously. “Friendship would be nice. It was good to meet another spider who understands the craft. Even if you did get stuck in your own web.”

“Character-building experience,” Anansi muttered.

“I’m sure.”

The Weaver stepped back, preparing to depart. “Take your time getting free. There’s no rush.”

She began to shift into traveling form, thread connecting back toward her Web’s center.

“Great Weaver?” Anansi called.

She paused.

“You really are magnificent. Even if you are terrifying.”

The Weaver smiled one more time, genuine warmth mixed with lingering amusement.

“So are you, Anansi. Even if you are stuck.”

And then she vanished, pulled back along the threads toward home, leaving the trickster god suspended in his own web, equal parts charmed and horrified by what had just happened.

The Weaver didn’t travel directly back to her center.

Instead, she took the long route, moving slowly through the Web’s pathways, giving herself time to think.

That had been... interesting. Strange. Unexpected.

The Web had absolutely tried to set her up. That much was clear. Cosmic matchmaking, suggesting she might want companionship beyond sisterhood.

And Anansi had been genuinely interested. Not just playing, not just trickster games. He’d watched her work with real appreciation, gotten distracted by genuine fascination.

The Weaver processed this information with her three aspects:

Moon: “That was sweet. He admired our skill. The compliment was sincere.”

Sun: “He was absolutely trying to court us. The whole competition was foreplay.”

Darkness: “Good thing we clarified about eating the last mate. He needed to know the stakes.”

Moon: “Was that clarification or threat?”

Darkness: “Both. He’s a trickster. He can handle honesty.”

Sun: “He seemed charmed and terrified in equal measure. Perfect balance.”

The Weaver hummed with combined amusement from all three aspects.

She’d enjoyed the encounter. Enjoyed talking shop with another spider, enjoyed the playful competition, enjoyed the moment of realizing she could mess with a trickster and watch him scramble.

Friendship would be nice. If Anansi actually visited like he’d promised, after he got unstuck, they could probably maintain a pleasant professional relationship. Colleagues who understood each other’s work. Fellow spiders who appreciated the craft.

No romance. The Beloved’s space remained sacred and untouchable.

But friendship? That was growing easier. First her sister goddesses, now potentially another spider who understood the particular joys and challenges of working with thread.

She was opening up. Slowly. Carefully. But undeniably.

The Weaver continued her leisurely journey home, processing the encounter, smiling to herself occasionally when she remembered Anansi’s panicked “cool cool cool” after the mate-eating revelation.

He’d be fine. He was a trickster. Probably had multiple plans for getting unstuck already formulating in his clever mind.

Though it might take a while.

Bonus Companion Guide

Stories make us feel. Sometimes those feelings are hard to work through. This section is like the end of a chapter in a textbook. Why? Because I am a nerd and love a good workbook! You can choose to ignore this, read it, reflect on it, journal your answers, or even share it. A quick note on my philosophy, reverence without levity becomes oppressive. Humor without depth becomes dismissive. This guide refuses to choose between them. Some questions may seem silly. That is for a purpose. Some may seem too hard. Don’t do them.

These are reflection prompts inspired by mythology, theory, shadow work, how I felt writing it and simply the story line. Take what resonates. Leave the rest. Seek professional support when needed and don’t tread further than you are ready to go, this is not meant to be therapy or professional advice.

The Web, manager of all souls and deaths and the fundamental fabric of existence, apparently decided that what the Weaver really needed was to meet a charming spider god and have an awkward flirtation situation. The thread glowed invitingly. It pulsed with what felt distinctly like “yes obviously” when she finally asked if she was supposed to visit. The universe, it turns out, has opinions about your social life and will engineer situations accordingly whether you asked for input or not. Think about the last time something that felt like coincidence turned out to be the universe being annoyingly helpful. The introduction that happened at exactly the right moment. The book that fell off the shelf. The conversation that started because someone was running late. Did you recognize it at the time or only in retrospect? And is there something happening right now that might be the Web glowing invitingly that you have been treating as background noise?

The Weaver and Anansi talked about webs and neither of them had to explain what they meant. The pattern that is barely visible until you step back. The way one thread pulling affects another three levels away. The craft that is simultaneously art and function and trap. There was no translation required. No starting from the beginning. Just two people who understood the same specific thing settling into the relief of not having to explain themselves for once. Think about the person in your life who understands your particular craft or your particular experience without requiring explanation. Not the person who is supportive and kind about it. The person who actually knows. What does it feel like to talk to them versus talking to someone who cares but doesn’t quite get it? And if you don’t have that person yet, what would it mean to find them?

Anansi was supposed to be spinning a web. He was extremely busy not spinning a web because he was watching her spin hers. He got so absorbed in admiring her mastery that his own work tangled around his legs and he ended up suspended in his own thread, thoroughly stuck, which is both a metaphor and also literally what happened. Think about a time you got so focused on someone else’s work, someone else’s progress, someone else’s way of doing the thing, that you lost the thread of your own. Not jealousy exactly. More like the specific trance of watching someone do something beautifully and forgetting you were supposed to be doing your own version of it. What were you supposed to be spinning while you were watching? And is any of it still tangled around your legs?

She waited until exactly the right moment, with exactly the right tone of gentle innocence, and mentioned that she had eaten her last mate. Just for context. The information was completely true. It was also deployed with the precision of someone who knew exactly what they were doing and enjoyed doing it. There is a version of honesty that is purely informational and a version that is also a little bit of a power move and sometimes those are the same sentence. Think about a piece of true information you have about yourself that you have never quite deployed at the right moment. Something that reframes things. Something that is clarifying and also slightly alarming and also actually important for people to know. What is it and when is the right moment and are you brave enough to say it with the same gentle sweetness the Weaver used?

Anansi spent the entire encounter being charming and strategic and smooth. He set up the competition, he watched her work, he delivered the admiration with practiced grace. He was very good at this. And then she said one sentence and he said cool cool cool and everything he had been performing fell slightly sideways while he tried to reorganize his understanding of the situation without letting it show. We have all been Anansi in this moment. The one where someone says something that completely reframes what has been happening and you have to keep your face composed while your brain does emergency restructuring. When did someone say something that landed like that for you, something that changed what you thought you understood about the situation? And what did your version of cool cool cool sound like?

... Read moreReading "The Spider-Off" reminded me just how powerful shared understanding can be — especially between those who craft with such intricate care, like spiders with their webs. The story vividly illustrates how the Great Weaver, a cosmic spider goddess, connects with Anansi, a trickster god from West African folklore, both masters in their own right of weaving—she of souls and existence, he of stories and cleverness. What struck me was the beautiful metaphor of their web-spinning competition, which on the surface was about skill, but beneath that lay a dance of connection, playful rivalry, and mutual respect. It resonates deeply with anyone who’s ever felt the exhilaration of working on their craft and being admired for it. There’s an undeniable joy in seeing your work recognized by someone who truly understands the nuances and challenges involved. Also, the dynamic between the Weaver’s serious, cosmic role and Anansi’s charismatic trickster charisma is delightfully relatable. There’s a moment when Anansi becomes so captivated by the Weaver’s mastery that he literally gets tangled in his own web — a humorous and humble reminder that even the most clever can be caught off guard by admiration and distraction. In real life, I’ve experienced similar moments where I’ve been so focused on someone else’s creativity or progress that I lost sight of my own work. Reflecting on this story makes me wonder what personal 'webs' I might be tangled in because of admiration or distraction. The Weaver’s gentle but firm disclosure that she eaten her last mate adds a layer of complex honesty and power dynamic; it’s a subtle yet profound reminder of personal boundaries cloaked in kindness. In relationships, professional or personal, there’s often important information that reframes interactions — sometimes shared with a mix of openness and a touch of strategic timing. I appreciate how this story captures the balance between being real and maintaining playful boundaries. Lastly, the idea of cosmic matchmaking and how the universe might nudge us toward connections is a comforting and playful concept. It encourages us to notice those 'coincidences' — the books that fall off shelves, the chance conversations — as possibly more than chance. Sometimes, like the Web in the story pulsing with invitation, life is a little noisier about guiding us than we realize. Overall, "The Spider-Off" is a compelling blend of mythology, personal growth, and the celebration of unique bonds formed through shared craft and understanding. It invites reflection on our own webs — the patterns we create, the connections we nurture, and the friendships that grow when someone truly 'gets' the art behind our work.
