Original Poem
We are memorizing verse 1a in Psalm 1 which states, “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly,”…
God often speaks to us through people. So when we are seeking counsel, it should be aligned with God’s word. If we make decisions solely based on our own thoughts and feelings or based on someone else’s feelings, we can easily be led astray.
Seek God’s voice in prayer and listen to those who do the same. You will know it’s from God when you feel overwhelming peace about your decision, because the Bible says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Phil 4:6-7 ESV

Making big decisions can be incredibly daunting, can't it? I know I've faced countless moments where 'Some decisions feel more significant than others,' and the weight of choosing the right path felt heavy on my shoulders. It's natural for us to seek guidance from those we trust – 'At times you seek advice from a friend, At times from your parents, Your sisters, or brothers...' – and their perspectives are often a gift. However, I've learned that true wisdom, the kind that brings lasting peace, comes from deeper engagement with what the Bible calls 'godly counsel.' But what does that really look like in our daily lives, and how do we truly walk on 'prayerful pathways'? For me, embarking on a 'prayerful pathway' means more than just a quick prayer before a big meeting. It's about cultivating a posture of listening and surrender. It involves dedicated time in prayer, asking God for clarity and direction, and then patiently waiting and watching for His response. Sometimes, His guidance comes as a quiet conviction, a strong sense of peace about a particular choice, just as Philippians 4:6-7 promises. Other times, it's through His Word, a scripture that suddenly illuminates a path, or even through the wise words of someone whose life clearly reflects God's principles. It’s crucial to remember that godly counsel isn't just about getting an answer; it's about drawing closer to the Counsellor Himself. Understanding 'counsel meaning in the bible' has been transformative for me. The Bible frequently speaks about seeking wisdom from God and from those who walk closely with Him. Psalm 1, which begins with the profound statement, “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly,” sets a clear standard. It's not just about avoiding bad advice; it's about actively pursuing advice that aligns with God's truth. This means when I'm listening to advice from friends or family, I'm now discerning if their words echo biblical principles, or if they're simply rooted in worldly perspectives or personal feelings. It's not about judgment, but about protection and seeking the best for my own spiritual journey. The Bible also encourages us in Proverbs 11:14, “Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.” This doesn't mean asking everyone for their opinion, but seeking out a select few, mature believers whose lives demonstrate faith and wisdom, and whose counsel is steeped in scripture. So, when those significant decisions arise, I now take a multi-faceted approach. First, I pour my heart out to God in prayer, laying out my concerns and asking for His divine perspective. Second, I immerse myself in His Word, searching for relevant passages that might speak to my situation. Third, I prayerfully consider the advice I've received from trusted, godly individuals, always filtering it through the lens of scripture. And finally, I listen for that overwhelming peace that only God can provide, confirming that I am indeed on His 'prayerful pathway' and following His wise counsel. It's a journey of faith, but one that promises true peace and direction.
